Long story short, my mother will not allow me to go see His All Holiness the Patriarch of Constantinople because, “…he’s a a ****** and I don’t want you to be a queer like him.” Do I have to honor that or can I go to Astoria to see him anyway?

tell her you’re going out for cigarettes and run like the wind.

I’m afraid since going to see him is not a religious obligation, you cannot simply disregard your mother’s direct order on religious grounds. Could you maybe spin a school assignment into a trip to Astoria? Covering the visit for the school newspaper or something?
