Does "I am" in Greek means " I am God"?

Jesus says to the Jews, “Unless you believe that I AM, you will die in your sins” (v.24).

I AM what?

Jesus declares to His disciples, “I tell you before it happens, so that **when it happens **you may believe that I AM” (13:19).

Surely He did not mean “i am the Messiah”.

yet we read:

Isaiah 43:10-13 “You are My witnesses,” declares the Lord, "And My servant whom I have chosen, In order that you may know and believe Me, And understand that I am He

John 18:6 When therefore He said to them, “I am,” they drew back, and fell to the ground.

Why?

A normal reader may not see any hidden meaning in Jesus’ words. However, as the words ‘I am’ become theologically loaded, especially when they provoke a strange reaction on the part of Jesus’ narrative audience, we become forced to ask.

Isaiah 41:10,13

'Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.

John 6:20
But He said to them, “It is I [ego eimi - predicateless absolute]; do not be afraid.”

Mt 14:27-33 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take courage, I am; [ego eimi - predicateless absolute] do not be afraid.”

Revelation 1:17And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as a dead man. And He laid His right hand upon me, saying, "Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, and the living One

Mt 28:20 " teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

Isaiah 44:6

“Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel And his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: 'I am the first and I am the last, And there is no God besides Me.”

Rev 22:12-13

"Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done. “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”

Deut 32:39

'See now that I, I am ‘ego eimi’], And there is no god besides Me; It is I who put to death and give life. I have wounded, and it is I who heal; And there is no one who can deliver from My hand.

John 11:25

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me shall live even if he dies,

Clear parallelism. Thx for this thread 👍

So, your reasoning is Jesus must be God because he said “I am”. You should consider doing a search on “I am” to see how many times that phrase is used in the Bible.

By this logic, Paul is revealing he too is God:

(1 Corinthians 15:10) But by God’s undeserved kindness I am what I am. And his undeserved kindness that was toward me did not prove to be in vain, but I labored in excess of them all, yet not I but the undeserved kindness of God that is with me.

Why not just listen to what Jesus himself says…

(John 17:3) This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ.

Jesus was the Son of God… whom YHWH sent forth as his representative… Just like He sent the prophets… He sent forth His Son…

(Hebrews 1:1-2) God, who long ago spoke on many occasions and in many ways to our forefathers by means of the prophets, 2*has at the end of these days spoken to us by means of a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things…

More cowardly hit-and-run postings jeg101? I am disappointed in you. Not surprised, but disappointed.

no it’s not about the I Am words, it is rather about how the gospels parallele the I AM of Jesus with the I AM of God in the OT.

"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end."

Those who do not believe Jesus is God, how do they understand a mere “human” saying that He is the first and last when these are exactly God and only God’s words?

There is no paralleling here… Your predisposition to believe the Trinity doctrine is causing you to read into the verse what is not there.

Anyone else in the Bible says: “I am” and you don’t presume they are claiming to be God… (for example John 9:9) and yet Jesus says the same thing and you conclude it’s “proof” he’s God.

Using John 8:58 to prove Jesus is YHWH is so weak… Especially in line with scriptures like Psa 110:1-5 which specifically show Jesus sitting at the right hand of YHWH and Acts 3:13 which shows that Jesus is the servant of YHWH, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

These so-called Trinity proof texts are like the emperors new clothes, if you stop and actually examine them with simple logic/reasoning, they fall apart and you’re left with the simple truth that Jesus is the Son of YHWH, not YHWH himself.

Isaiah 42:6-8

"I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness, I will also hold you by the hand and watch over you, And **I will appoint ****you **as a covenant to the people, As a light to the nations, To open blind eyes, To bring out prisoners from the dungeon, And those who dwell in darkness from the prison. "I am the Lord, that is My name; I will not give My glory to another, Nor My praise to graven images

Acts 26:15-18

"And I said, ‘Who art Thou, Lord?’ And the Lord said, **'I am Jesus **whom you [Paul] are persecuting. 16 ‘But arise, and stand on your feet; for this purpose I have appeared to you, to **appoint you **a minister and a witness not only to the things which you have seen, but also to the things in which I will appear to you; 17 delivering you from the Jewish people and from the Gentiles, to whom I am sending you, 18 to **open their eyes **so that they may turn from **darkness to light **and from the **dominion of Satan **to God, in order that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.’

Are all these parallelism between what God says/does and what Jesus says/does a mere coincidence? all of them?

Acts 13:47 "For thus the Lord has commanded us, ‘I have placed You as a light for the Gentiles, That You should bring salvation to the end of the earth.’"

Isaiah 49:6 He says, "It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant To raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also make You a light of the nations So that My salvation may reach to the end of the earth."

Isaiah 44:24

Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, and the one who formed you from the womb, "I**, the Lord, am the maker of all things**, Stretching out the heavens by Myself, And spreading out the earth all alone.

John 1:3

"All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being

Deut 32:39

'See now that I, **I am **‘ego eimi’], And there is no god besides Me; It is I who put to death and give life. I have wounded, and it is I who heal; And there is no one who can deliver from My hand.

John 11:25

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me shall live even if he dies,

Hi

I think it is not, but when one is short of arguments one may stretch it to enormous proportions, while it is not there.

Thanks
But you would say that, wouldn’t you? You should maybe sort out if you are are accepted according to your Muslim belief, because from what I understand, other Muslim groups think your group aren’t really Muslims.

Hi

Well, as long as I am sure with reasons that I am on the right path, I don’t have to worry what others think of me without valid and rational reasons/argumnemts.

Thanks
