when we have to say

“Lord I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I’ll be healed”

why can’t we say something like

Lord I love you, come in and purify me

but to say unworthy

why do they (the church) have us to say that. And then why do we go ahead and receive him if were unworthy??

Actually with the recent changes it is now " Lord I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the world and I shall be healed." It is meant to echo the words of the Centurion in the Bible whose servant Jesus heals. In fact, the changes were made to be closer to the original text in scripture.

Anyways, we are unworthy to recieve God. Admitting that is a sign of humility.

God Bless

Doesn’t bother me a bit. I am unworthy, fully and completely. And so are you. Everyone is. I’d hate if it was changed, firstly because it’s an ancient part of the mass, secondly because it’s rooted in Scripture, and thirdly because it surely would be for no other reason than political correctness.

I wouldn’t want to say, “Lord, I love you. Come in and purify me,” because it’s not historical, it’s not Scriptural, and it’s too sentimental. Yes, I love God. But I don’t think the Domine, non sum dignus (that’s what this part of the mass is called) should be ripped out and replaced with something like that. We already have so little in the mass usually anymore to emphasize our unworthiness. The Domine, non sum dignus actually used to be recited three times before receiving communion and the Confiteor (confession of sins) was recited also a second time before reception. So there used to be four prayers emphasizing our unworthiness. Now there’s only one. I want to keep it.

We receive him even though we’re unworthy because Jesus commanded us to through his unapproachable, unmatchable grace.

I am aware of the new wording,

and the new wording is a bit better, and I know where it came in the Scripture, but many other things are said in Scriptures,

but I still find it offensive to have us say that ,

who is worthy,

Why not say,

Lord I humbly come to receive you, so that I may be healed and cleasned.

but unworthy to receive you, unworthy, Tell me what does one have to do to be worthy?

Scripture offends you? Jesus didn’t reprimand the Centurion when he asked Jesus to heal his servant. I’m sure if Jesus didn’t like the Centurion calling himself “unworthy,” he would have corrected him. But he didn’t.

We can never be worthy. Not on this earth, at least.

Because it is true. You and I are rubbish compared to God.
It is the utterly amazing Love of God for us that saved us.
It is not because we love God that He will come to purify us. It is because He wants.
We are nothing. We are zero.
Only then God enters us.
If you are filled with our pride, God has no place inside us.
My opinion, my way…

God did not make rubbish !!!

and it has nothing to do with pride. Do you telll your wife and or husband or Father and Mother that you are unworthy?

has your Father , Mother, Husband or Wife and said your unworthy ?

I’ll say this,

when you think your unworthy of someones love, you will not want to be around that person that person and won’t have a relationship with that person without barriers.

Just like Adam who ran and hid from God in the Garden because he was naked.

Love is a two way street.

Jesus himself declared John the Baptist the greatest man ever born to women. Matthew 11:11 is where you’ll find what Jesus said.
John, being declared great by Jesus, said he was not worthy to even untie Jesus’ sandal straps.

Now, I’m not speaking for you but I know no matter how good I think I am I’m nowhere close to John the Baptist. Even if I thought I was, I’ve yet to hear Jesus declare how great I am.

Untill such a time, I think I’ll stick to being humble and pray with all my heart that He allow me the privilage of recieving Him in communion

Not to nitpick, but it’s:

“Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.”

In the EF Mass it’s recited three times just to make certain it sinks into us that we’re not worthy. They should bring that back too.

Actually, the entire point of the seeming paradox between our not being worthy and Jesus letting us receive him anyways is a perfect illustration of His unlimited grace and love for us. It certainly wouldn’t be as profound if we were worthy of it.

And it isn’t meant as an insult. True humility is acknowledgement of true strengths and weaknesses. It is factual to say that I am not worthy of receiving the God who made the heavens and earth and humanity. Compared that to me; I have absolutely no power whatsoever, no life, without God. It would be foolish to call us equal in some way or to not notice this huge difference between us. Plus, He is all good, and I am capable of doing wrong, which also explains the specific not being worthy idea. Plus it is scriptural.

This wording might be wrong for any relationship between two normal humans, but this is the Son of God we are talking about. We do things on his terms, not ours. We don’t get to use our relationship with him or his power how we please. Instead we show our immense gratitude for his grace and mercy by doing our best to empty ourselves of ourselves before we are filled with Christ.

Suppose you picked up a candy wrapper and tossed it in a trash can and someone came up to you and said for doing that, he’d give you a million dollars. Your reaction would probably be along the lines of this having been too small of an act to get a million dollars for, right?

So, nothing we do makes us worthy of receiving God Himself in the Eucharist. With everything God has already given us, and now He gives us this really enormous Gift of His own Body and Blood?

It has nothing to do with us in relation to other human beings, it has to do with human beings in relation to God Himself. Because we have received everything, even our existence, from God, we are not worthy to receive more, just as picking up a bit of litter is not worthy of a million dollars.

It is because, in relation to us, God is so very great, not because we are bad. The Eucharist is therefore very much an unmerited Gift, of which we are too small to be worthy.

All the time. ALL the time. ALL the time.

I know where you are coming from-it sounds a bit harsh, doesn’t it?

However, try to remember that Jesus Christ is SINLESS. That means He never SINS. Does your mother, husband, daughter, bff sin? Yes, therefore, they are not worth to receive Him.

Your in my prayers.

Very happily — yes. To do anything less is horribly uncharitable to them and will not get souls to heaven. Charity lies in providing the truth to others, not placating them with warm fuzzies.

NONE of us are worthy.

Next time you are at Mass, look up at that crucifix (if your parish even has one, sadly many don’t). Look at that Man on the cross and honestly ask yourself if you or anyone you know is truly worthy of what He allowed to happen to Him. Really meditate on the word “worthy”, and the Sacrifice Christ made. I think (hope) you will get your answer.

Not really. I will be the first to say that I am not worthy. I am also allergic to communion wafers. Wish our church has Gluten Free.

Heh. How often have you read the writings of the saints? Sometimes they get pretty bogged down with what seems like an excess of humility. It can be pretty difficult to trudge through a lot of it, but you remember that these people were far closer to God than I ever have been, and see him more clearly than I ever could. We all know the adage that familiarity breeds contempt— you would think that if anyone was in danger of being too casual with God, it would be the very ones who had such a close, profound relationship with, but the opposite is true.

Love is a two-way street, as you said, but your analogy is a false analogy, because it only takes into account human beings-- we’re all fellow-servants, all creations of God. The relationship between a Creator and a Creation is totally unique and has no human parallel, not even parent and child, although that relationship can definitely give you glimpses into God’s enormous love. And it sometimes helps you realize that if nothing you can ever do can make you innately “worthy” of that kind of love on a human scale, what could you possibly do on your own to make yourself innately worthy of the infinite vastness of God’s love? Recognizing and acknowledging that chasm is an exercise in humility, and realizing that God continues to pour out his gifts upon us anyways is an exercise in faith and hope.

It doesn’t offend or bother me at all. I know that I’m unworthy. For all that God has done for us, I KNOW that I am unworthy, and as someone mentioned above, I will never be as long as I’m on this earth. :nope:

Have you read any of the writings of the Saints? One trait they have in common is humility. All the Church Fathers (and Mothers) never cease telling God how unworthy they are and none of them stop being grateful for any blessings that they receive from him although in their own words, they don’t deserve it.

Are you holier than St Augustine, St Bonaventure, St Teresa of Avila, St Maria Faustina, St Francis of Assisi, St Francis de Sales, St Dominic and so on?

I hate to tell you this but this nothing more than pride. Tremble, before you ever show pride in front of the Living God.
James 4:6
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Society tells us, “you’ve come a long way, baby. you deserve it.” But society doesn’t believe in the Grace of God. Society believes in working harder, pulling ourselves up by our boot straps.

God tells us, “I no longer call you servants, I call you friends”. We are never needed by God. God was self sufficient before we entered the scene. He created us out of love. He sustains us our of love, there is nothing we can do to earn it.

Standing in front of a perfect and sinless God, even one little white lie is a death sentence. He chose to send Jesus Christ as payment for our sins. We did not earn Christ, nor do we earn the Eucharist. God chooses to give us His Son, what have we done that is worth that?

God doesn’t make garbage. But we pollute ourselves with sin, therefore we need His Grace. By calling ourselves “not worthy”, we are just recognizing our dependance on Him. Technically, if we go to confession and do penance right before the Eucharist, we would be free of sin (hopefully). But this is a very short lived state, and it is still b/c He reconciled us to Himself through the Sacrament of Confession. If we stop recognizing His work of cleansing us and start thinking we deserve it, then we will soon find ourselves on a path away from Him.
