I’m new to the forums and just am returning to mass after a long absence. Frankly I’m shocked and disheartened at what parents are letting their kids wear to mass. Not to mention what many of the adults are wearing.
I liked the post a while back asking what you would wear to a wedding or funeral, job interview or fancy restaurant. How many of us need to be at least business casual at the office? Doesn’t the Lord deserve at least the same respect?
I wear a suitcoat and tie to church on Sundays. Not because anyone tells me to but because that is one way I show respect for Jesus. It puts me in a serious no nonsense mood. If I just show up in the same jeans and sneakers and sweatshirt that I’ve been wearing all morning it just doesn’t feel right. To me.
As far as being comfortable, I like the idea of meditating on the suffering of Christ compared to what he went through for us a stiff collared shirt for an hour is no biggie. Besides most all churches are air conditioned now anyway. Not like the good ole days when the oscillating fans where blowing and we’d try to get to mass early to get a spot near the fan (and still be perspiring at the end of mass).
Not that this matters any but I live near alot of black people. They are always well dressed for their Baptist services. Almost all the men are wearing jackets and ties and all the women are wearing dresses and many wear hats. Nobody looks like they just rolled out of bed and nobody looks sleazy.
I wish some of these priests we have nowadays would speak up and address this and some of the other slack behavior I see during their sermons. I better stop before I get up on my soapbox of what’s wrong with the Church these days.
