…because sleep only comes to those who know everything’s going to be alright.

That’s very sweet, but it sounds like anthropomorphising God beyond what is reasonable 🙂

I was thinking about the story from the Gospels of Matthew 8:23-27, Mark 4:35-41, and Luke 8:22-25 where Jesus was sleeping in the boat and the disciples were terrified that they would go under in the storm. They woke Him up and He calmed the storm.

"Who is it then, that the sea and wind obey him?

We must praise Him every day for all the graces He bestows upon us, starting with opening one’s eyes in the morning to a new day. Lots of ‘Lord, have mercys’ and ‘thank-you Lords’ throughout my day.

Jesus was fully human. I don’t think we need to worry about “anthropomophizing” God.
Also, Jesus did sleep when everything was okay. He stayed up all night in the Garden worrying about mankind.

Yes, but does God “sleep” in Heaven? Does He need sleep/wake cycles like us?

And besides, presence or absence of sleep makes no difference as to the seriousness or not of a situation.
People in grief or depression may have sleeplessness or on the contrary, sleep way too much.
It has no bearing on the gravity of the situation however.

“He that keepeth Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps” Psalm 121:4.

Of course God doesn’t “need” sleep. He doesn’t “need” us either.

You’re being way overly literal. I guess I should expect that from this forum.

OP, I liked your original thought. I’m sorry that others seem to prefer to pick it to pieces rather than either just enjoy it or move on.

I may not have joy but thank God for giving me His peace so i can sleep at night. Sometimes i get a strange feeling that my prayers have been answered in big ways but because it’s so gradual i don’t see it very clearly. One time a while ago after I said an anguished prayer to God I said Lord please even if I forget I know you won’t but I really mean everything I said so please…
I just rambled I think… sleep is great when you have a newborn, thanks to my husband.

Let me put it this way: I find it weird that most of the times that things go awry in my life are when I know I am doing the right thing, so the “God is sleeping” thing for me is that He lets me do my thing because He sees I’m handling it well in spite of the storm.

Another way of thinking of it is this: if the disciples were slacking off in tending their boat in the storm just because Jesus was with them, do you think He would have been sleeping soundly?

And the thing about “God sleeping” is something saints talk about too, most notably for me St. Therese of Lisieux:
Dryness and drowsiness—such is the state of my soul in its intercourse with Jesus! But since my Beloved wishes to sleep I shall not prevent Him. I am only too happy that He does not treat me as a stranger, but rather in a homely way. (Letter to Mother Agnes of Jesus, January 1889)

Thank you for the kind words!

And so He does! The times in our lives that it seems He is sleeping is in fact Him refining us like silver and gold in the fire:
He will act like a refiner and purifier of silver and will cleanse the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then they will offer the Lord a proper offering. (Malachi 3:3)
