I wear the Brown Scapular- got it blessed but haven’t been invested, but it means I’m supposed to pray the Rosary every day. Don’t have a problem with that- usually.

But I suffer from depression and anxiety (doing better with medication) and sometimes I am so mentally distraught that I am literally unable to pray. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, I’m just a wreck.

I downloaded an audio rosary into my iPod and have listened to it when I’m in a mental state that I can’t pray (also some litanies)

What I’m wondering is, does listening to the rosary on audio count the same as actually praying it? Or am I “cheating”?

Certainly. Provided you are uniting your heart and spirit with the audio pray-er and praying along with the person, despite distractions that will come for almost everyone who prays.

I used to listen to audio rosary on the radio every night while doing dishes when I was a child. I recently taped a video recitation of the rosary so I can pray along and not suffer so many distractions. It helps to keep me focused. It is no different than ‘listening’ to the priest at mass, which is another form of audio, no? We unite ourselves with him as he prays on our behalf.

Be at peace.

👍 Oh, I think it counts!

(not that I’m a brown scapular, invested expert, ha ha!)

I have suffered from depression as well. And sometimes, you just can’t get your own thoughts together enough, or energy enough to even say a prayer…I, too have the rosary on CD…I find it to be very, very helpful in this area.

You are doing awesome! God bless you and may Our Blessed Mother be your protectress.

If you are actually praying along with it (as much as you can in the “state” you’re in) then it counts. I also suffer the same kind of mental problems and I’ve found that one of the best ways for me to “center on Him” is praying the “Hail, Mary’s”. Remember that Mary is our mother and will be looking for a chance to have compassion and understanding.

Thanks, guys. I was a little concerned. I suffered an anxiety attack yesterday, and when I get these things they linger for sometimes 2-3 days. I was actually not able to go to liturgy this morning- I can’t be around people when I’m in that state, plus I didn’t want to be crying in a public place.

I’ve been feeling better as the day is wearing on- I’m still feeling touchy, but not as bad as this morning.

I’m glad that I’ve got these things down to once every six weeks or so. I was getting one about once a week, and being as how they can take me out for days at a time (I guess I’m just not resilient, or maybe I make it worse by trying to fight it off), well…

Yes, it counts. Pray the rosary with the Ipod even when you don’t feel like it. An Australian priest on EWTN said in his homily to continue the rosary even when we don’t feel like it.

As for your anxiety attacks, you will survive this period in your life. I did and went on to get married (16 yrs) and have two wonderful kids. If I can do it with Mary’s help then so will you.

My catholic radio station plays Fr Groeschel and Simonetta doing the Rosary at 11pm. I love to do the Rosary along with them, it’s way easier for me than solo. I downloaded their two cds to my ipod so I can take it with me anywheres. I certainly think it counts.

I downloaded the Divine Mercy chaplet as well.

😃

Yes, it counts as long as you concentrate on what is being prayed. We are all prone to distractions even when praying by ourselves. But, yes it counts according to the degree of your concentration, just as if you were saying it by yourself.

I suffer from depression and anxiety as well and one night I couldnt sleep I was in such mental torture that I found my cassette tape that my mom gave me of Paul Rymniak’s Healing Rosary and I would pray along with it till I fell asleep and when I would wake up, I would turn the tape over and continue praying more. If you can afford to get you this tape or now it can be bought on CD. I would get it if I were you. This is one of the best things I have for when I feel afraid and cant do what I need to do. They have a special part in that Rosary for people with mental issues like you and I. That is very comforting to me. I may be wrong in suggesting this to you but it does work for me.
