Hello Grandma, remember me? you used to take me to Mass and pray for me all the time, don’t you stop praying for me now that you are in Heaven.

If you say you love me, help me with your prayer. I want to go to Heaven too!

Don’t you think my calling out to my grandma is in vain because she can no longer pray for me? she can’t hear me?

What kind of love is it then?

If your grandma is in Heaven she most certainly can pray for you. If she is in Purgatory then she is more in need of your prayers than you are of hers at the current time. The problem is you don’t know. I am almost postive my grandma is in Heaven since she lived such a saintly life but I can not know for sure.

There is no reason to believe that we should be cut off from those who are more united with Christ. If the intercession of saints is not true, but it is true that deceased Christians are in Heaven (as my Baptist family members believe) then we can lay out the following:
  1. Intercession of saints (=those in Heaven) is not true
  2. Saints are in Heaven
  3. To be in Heaven means to be united fully with Christ
  4. To be a Christian on earth is to be partially united with Christ
  5. Likewise, to be a Christian on Earth is to be partially united with those who are fully united with Christ
  6. Therefore, just as Christ “interceedes before the Father” so, too, can those united with Him.
  7. Therefore, Saints, even though they are in Heaven, still have intercessory powers.
However, this contradicts #1. Therefore, Saints have intercessory powers.
This syllogism probably has some problems that I don’t want to work out, but in case the conclusion confuses you, it was what is known in logic as a “dillema.” That means that if we are making a statement that leads us to a particular conclusion, then the negation of that statement leads to the same conclusion, the conclusion must be true. So, by assuming the statement in #1, we come to the conclusion of #7. However, if #7 is true, then #1 is false. But if #1 is false, then #7 is true. Either way, #7 is true.
