Sorry if this has been asked and answered already, but does attendance at Mass at an Eastern Catholicism church count as fulfilling the Sunday Mass obligation in the Roman Catholic Church?

Tx,

jj

Yes, it most certainly does.

Yes, absolutely. For official confirmation, look to the Catechism which states:

2180 The precept of the Church specifies the law of the Lord more precisely: “On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass.”(⇒ CIC, can. 1247.) “The precept of participating in the Mass is satisfied by assistance at a Mass which is celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite either on the holy day or on the evening of the preceding day.”(⇒ CIC, can. 1248 # 1.)

Yes.

The Eastern Catholic Churches have a Divine Liturgy, not a Mass. 😉

A related question - I have read before the RC view on “cross-communion” but what is the East’s view? It is one thing to say “I should be welcome there…” and quite another to say “I am welcome there…” I have good friends who are in the process of converting from protestant to orthodox and I would like to attend and partake of the body and blood - but I’m not sure how welcome an RC believer would be for communion. Would I be presumptuous? Any other comments on etiquette for RCs when visiting an EO church?

You can’t receive communion in an Orthodox church. The Catholic church allows it, but the Orthodox church doesn’t.

In an Eastern Catholic church (that is, one in communion with the Pope) you can receive communion freely.

Not exactly.

Only the Eastern Catholic Churches of the Byzantine family of liturgical rites (14 particular Churches) use the Divine Liturgy according to St. John Chrysostom.

The Catholic Armenians use a distinct liturgy, although it is thought to be an older form of the Byzantine Divine Liturgy.

Eastern Catholic Churches of the Antiochian family of litrugical rites (5 particular Churches) and of the Alexandrian family of litrugical rites (2 particular Churches) use different forms of liturgies, respectively.

Most of the particular Churches of the Anthiochian tradition translate their “Qurbana/Qorbono” to mean “Mass,” as in the offering/sacrifice of the Mass."

You seem to be confused and it’s understandable; however, please be aware that Eastern Catholic churches are not the same as Eastern Orthodox churches.

EC churches are fully united with the Pope and therefore you may receive the Eucharist at any of them.

EO churches are not in union with the Pope, and you should definitely not present yourself for communion there.

Hope that helps! 🙂

Should not, but may, without schism nor sin, if one is unable to get to a Catholic parish. Not likely in the US (outside of Alaska, that is), unless one is reduced to foot travel.

My family and I attend both the RC and EC. When attending a EC Liturgy in a new parish we introduce ourselves to the priest before Liturgy if at all possible. Communion is by tongue only and given to you with the use of your name.

When going to my Eastern Orthodox friends Liturgy we introduce ourselves and do not present ourselves for communion.

Yup! It’s that simple. Attendance at the Divine Liturgy in any Eastern Church that is in full communion with the Holy See satisfies your Sunday obligation.

I go to Divine Liturgy instead of Mass quite often.

Did your Protestant friends ever consider converting to an Eastern rite? That way they could be in the true Faith and not in schism. Converting from heresy to schism really doesnt solve anything. Perhaps you would feel comfortable explaining that to them for the benefit of their immortal souls and yours. God bless you.

I need to get to a Divine Liturgy soon!

Yes. Ahhh, but be warned, you attend once and you will be hooked for life.

That happened to me with the Traditional Roman Rite, my goal is to attend at least once every major Rite still active in the Universal Church.
