I’m a cradle cathoilic, raised in a home where my father was catholic, my mother was not. My formation was not that great so I need a little help. My mother (after years of prayers) is considering finally becoming a catholic- to her knowledge she was never baptised, just “dedicated”. Is it necessary for her to be baptised first in order to become a catholic? She’s not ready to do RCIA but I think she’ll get there- God willing! I want to help her but I’m not 100% sure what nedds to be done first. Thanks!

Since she wasn’t baptized before she would be baptized as part of becoming a Catholic, not ahead of time. Usually the person is baptized, confirmed, and receives first Communion at the same mass, especially if they come into the church at the Easter vigil mass.
My 16 year old cousin was instructed privately by a Jesuit, so her baptism and first Communion were not done at a regular parish mass. But this is unusual.
If your mom is finally considering becoming Catholic maybe she would be willing to consider starting RCIA if you tell her many parishes begin it in September. She can begin RCIA without making a commitment that she will definitely become Catholic this year. The first couple of months are the ‘inquiry period’. Anyone can attend.
Going through a good RCIA program is very helpful because she could ask any questions she might have and she would get a chance to meet Catholics in the parish and other people who are interested in becoming Catholic.
In many places, anyone can attend the entire formation period but can put off actually becoming Catholic until they feel ready. If they decide they’re not yet ready for the commitment, they just don’t go through the ‘rites’ at mass yet. It sometimes happens that people who are hoping for an annulment go through all the sessions and then enter the church later when it finally comes through.
Do you and your mother realize that she’s welcome to go to mass and to parish activities even though she isn’t yet a Catholic? Or maybe she’s been doing that for years already.
