Does NFP really work?

What if a couple does marry young and having 2 children is genuinely all they are ever able to afford emotionally and financially??

Does NFP become an unhealthy practice of sexual anorexia in their case? What else should they do?
Having married young, i seriously do not understand how one can can afford/ handle 2 children but not 3 or 4 or more…

If you are extremely poor, even one child is a huge financial burden, but your average middle-class American, who knows how to budget, CAN have more than 2.
If you space them out ok (2-3years), you notice things get easier with each child.

I look at myself, who was convinced that 1 was more than I could ever handle, for a while I was even convinced I could NOT handle the sleep deprivation and the stress of one child. Well, now I have 3, I’m a stronger person for it, my husband is a bigger man and our children are a happy bunch. They don’t know what we can and cannot afford, and yes, we did have to hire someone to help out so we can get some sleep and some odd, us-time. - as we only have one grandparent, who is not very available, but we cut down on some dispensable things for that. We didn’t have a vacation in 3 years but we got plenty of time to vacation as we’re still young.

Baby 3 was an NFP surprise and I feel it was God’s way of showing us that we CAN do more, and to show us how much each child helps us grow in sanctity. If it hadn’t happened, to this day we would be living with our conviction that we just can’t handle more than 2. Now, we are looking forward to number 4 more than to any other. We have gained the trust that where God gives sheep He also gives pastures and feel that the joy children bring - well, the joy of doing God’s will really- , undeniably outweighs the hardship.

But, spacing IS very important. Since #3 came within 18 months of #2 and #2 is not a good sleeper, I would not have managed without hired help and I’m extra grateful that God provided for that. If you are by yourself, you definitely do not want 3 little ones totally dependent on you.

Yes, I have a LadyComp. A $500 machine that gives you the red light for 14 days each month lol.
What?!?! Seriously?
It says 8-10 days on the site, except for the first month while it’s customizing the readings…
How long have you had it for? How many yellow days? I was so excited about this find, don’t shatter my dreams lol

It’s actually good to hear people showing that it does work. As a bachelor, I don’t have a dog in the fight, but I do hear alot of people claiming it works even though they have over 6 kids. I’ve always thought it must not work very well if that’s the case!

Well, I’ll save my money. Even though 14 days is a lot better than 25 days (with NFP, I have ONE safe day on average)..

And yes, I’ve gone to doctors and spoken to my NFP teacher.

Yes, it does work. You must learn to control yourself though, I think that is the biggest hurdle most couples have. It is also the only method the Church allows to delay pregnancy (other than breast feeding or abstaining). If the Church teaches, we need to shut up and follow directions.
I guess my biggest problem with this is that the Church doesn’t exactly have a great track record when it comes to science.

Other things, yeah, science? No way.

 Then you are uninformed.

Copernicus (the first person to hypothesize that the Earth revolved around the Sun was a Catholic cleric.
Gregor Mendel, a Catholic monk studied and perfected plant breading and really advanced genetics. (He is considered a father of biology)
The person who came up with the big bang theory was a Catholic Priest (Mgsr. Georges Lemaître).

I am sure there are many more examples, these are just the most well known.

I got it and started using it 6 months prior to getting married. So it’s got 2 years worth of my information. I just double checked it and this past cycle it gave me 12 red days and 1 yellow day.

You can still get one, I mean, I have “unprotected sex” on my green days and haven’t gotten prego yet, so it’s working.

But isn’t that the same as if one charted and followed signs manually anyway? That’s what over half the NFP users on this forum are saying anways…actually worse. Quite of few posters are saying they only have 3-4 safe days a month.

Glad it’s worked for you. Unfortunately, in this crazy economy and fast paced life style, it really is not unheard of for some couples to really not be able to handle more than 2 children:
Yes, NFP does work. 11 years married, using Marquette model and Clearblue and we have 2 beautiful daughters - 2 is the maximum number our patience, finances, and sanity can allow. 🙂 But we are always open to life - we know it’s possible but as NFP is 99% effective if used correctly, 2 healthy happy girls is what we’re blessed with.
So my questions for “Two Angels” still stands. 👍

Yes, it is the same thing. Only difference is the machine does it for you.

NFP is simple and effective in the same way that diet and exercise is simple and effective. NFP and exercise are both easy and effective if you follow the rules, but they both require loads of dedication and hard work.

There are elements of our culture that are not healthy for families. While some of these things are not immoral in and of themselves, you do have to get creative about how you live your life. I definitely do that there are some safety regulations that are there solely to help the baby industry and make parents feel like they need to spend more money on their babies than they actually do.

So you’re saying that there is never a just reason to avoid having more than 2 kids?

I know for a fact that some people have to “get creative” and do everything extremely on the cheap just so they can HAVE 2 kids… 🤷

Would using NFP be unhealthy/anorexic for this marriage, as you stated in your earlier post?

Yes it works.

So long as you are disciplined enough, and have faith in God’s plan. Don’t forget about the faith part.

Crazy and uncertain economic times are not something new to 2012, they have effected nearly every generation in one way or another, and some generations far worse than what we see today. Not sure exactly what you mean by fast paced lifestyle, but we are all usually capable of slowing things down a bit, and cutting back on activities and commitments, if we choose to.

It is certainly not unheard of for a couple to believe they can’t handle another child just like it’s not unheard of for many to make an immoral instead of moral choice to be sure that one doesn’t come about.

God’s design for the way our bodies are made to work is not flawed. He gives us free will, to have sex or not. If he wanted us to have an on off switch for procreation he would have installed it. Instead, knowing that we are a sinful bunch that would look for loopholes, he gave us the Church to instruct us on such matters, and a conscience and self control to govern us. Whether we choose to listen and follow or instead try to rationalize away our actions through so called common sense or just plain old arrogance with a "we know better’ attitude is clearly up to the individual.

The answer I keep getting here is… well, it’s not really an answer to my original question. Instead it’s just posters basically saying that there is no such thing as grave reasons to avoid having more than 2 kids. I don’t believe this, personally.

Do you really need “grave” reasons to use NFP to avoid anyway? I really don’t see why you would. Did I miss something?

OF course there are grave reasons to not have more than 2 kids. Honestly though a generic “the economy is crazy and our lives are fast paced” doesn’t really seem grave, but …that’s where the rest of my previous reply comes in. If it IS really grave, then they should follow God’s design to avoid conception and abstain from that which makes another child possible.
