Does one need to be there by the Gospel reading to receive Communion?

I was wondering about a persons ability to recieve communion at daily mass. I know someone who routinely gets to daily mass just before Communion and then leaves pretty quickly afterwards. I was under the impression that in order to recieve communion, one had to be there for the gospel; but this person claims that isn’t the case for daily mass, only for fulfilling our Sunday obligation. Who is right?
