Does one's soul go straight to heaven or hell after death?

Jesus told the thief crucified with him: today you will be with me in paradise. In fact, Jesus did not go to heaven that same day. He still went to the dead for 3 days and after his resurrection it took him 40 day until his ascension. What is the Catholic explanation to this?
