Trullo and Nicaea ratified several sets of canons, including the apostolic canons which themselves include another biblical canon.

Can you give me more references on this one? I read some about Trullo adopting the canons of Carthage, but could not find one on Nicea.

And which Biblical canon was adopted?
I am not convinced that either intended to bind the entire church to the canon at Carthage.

Trullo in its second canon approves the Apostolic Canons. Nicaea II does so in its first canon.
And which Biblical canon was adopted?
Both, presumably. Neither one mentions specifically adopting one biblical canon or another, and that is where I think the argument falls flat. Both councils in fact approved two contradictory canons, and on that account it seems likely that they did not intend to promulgate them as closing the canon.
You got me confused, here. Which council are you referring to here?
Both Trullo and Nicaea II.
And if a council adopts a canon, what would be the intent if not to agree to it and make it binding on the entire church?
See above. It’s not that the council adopted one canon. It passed two contradictory canons (three, if you count St. Athanasius’ canon, which excludes the deuterocanonical books). To me at least, that seems to indicate that the intent was not to make a closed canon.

Thanks, Cav, for the info.

On Nicea II, I just read Canon 1. It does not specifically say Carthage, but Trullo, as far as I recall, does mention Carthage.

Can you give me more info regarding Nicea II on this. Thanks.
