We are all part of a universal Faith, but it seems that it is almost universally true that for many Catholics their growth in the Faith completely stops just after the sacrament of Confirmation. In fact their faith seems to disipate and or disappears.😦
Shouldn’t this be a time that their Faith should just sky rocket and be on fire eager to serve and know more ?🙂

What can the Church do to encourage people to live the Faith more fully at this time ? This is the time we lose so many .

We are here to Know, Love, and Serve God. God is infinite, yet we are called to grow in knowledge of him. This takes daily prayer and study. If you really loved somebody, you would spend many hours trying to get to know that person. We seem willing to spend time with anyone, except God.

Individaul Spiritual Growth is just that, individual spiritual growth.

The Church has many programs and prayer groups. However, as the saying goes, “You can give a Catholic a Bible, but you can not make him read.”

The sacrament of Confirmation is usualy given at an age where the persons are young and confronted with a lot of theories of the seculare world. It’s also given at a time were the young ones psycologicaly are to mature, grow out of their parents “shoes” and stand on their own feet in a couple of years.

It’s the time when it’s easy to loose them.

We must pray and pray and pray for them! We must also pray for the catholic youth group to grow and to be a real alternative to the seculare worlds temptations!

I would argue that the sacrament of Confirmation does not mark the end of the recipient’s spiritual growth. While I am sure there are cases in which that is true (for example, youth who are shuffled through pre-confirmation “programs” rich in fluff and appearances but poor in good catechesis- but who never really wanted to be there in the first place.) For these youth, I feel sorry and troubled. They are not receiving good instruction, and because of contrived programs they lose interest altogether, so that the process of getting to Confirmation is something to endure for one’s parents to meet the expectations of the parish community. That is not the right reason to go through with it. “Community” in this regard is inferior to an individual’s personal desire for God and to learn more about Him and the faith. It can be damaging.

For the true candidate who is seeking Confirmation because of the genuine call from God toward the Church, not even the most horridly thrown together program can turn him away or make him lose interest – and the day he receives the sacrament is a powerful and enhancing spiritual experience that leads to even greater thirst for knowledge and longing for a closeness with God.

Actually the priest gave a homily on something like this today. He talked about how Peter wanted to pitch up a tent and stay on top the mountain after the transfiguration of Jesus. He said so many times in our lives we come to a point where we think we have it all figured out and we can just stop there and that we dont need anything else. He said it is like that in our faith. We think we are right where we need to be in our faith and that we dont need God to ask anything of us anymore or give to us anymore. He said that God is never done with us until our last breath and then even then we are with him in paradise.

I was that way for a long time. I thought I knew it all and that I didn t need to grow in my faith. Over the past month I have been going through a wonderful conversion back in to my catholic faith. I am falling in love with the Lord more and more everyday. I love reading the bible and watching ewtn programs to learn more about my faith. I feel like there is always something for me to learn about God and the catholic faith everyday of my life. I only pray that everyone else realizes this.

why does our growth in faith stop after confirmation? for the same reason some people’s intellectual growth stops after graduation, they think they know it all and they have nothing else to learn–the true hallmark of the ignorant person. It is a matter of laziness and pride. confirmation has filled the person with the gifts of the Holy Spirit but the person is unwilling to allow God to work in him through those gifts.

We should review the catechism, the Baltimore Catechism, for example, so that we keep in mind what the Catholic Church teaches. We can do this on an annual basis.

This way we won’t forget what the Catholic Church teaches. And we will be prepared when someone asks us a question about the Catholic Religion.

Well I don’t know what will happen after I receive confirmation in April(I am currently on RCIA), but one thing for sure is that my faith has sky rockted ever since i decided to join the RCIA last January and it has been bursting in flames more and more everyday.
