A lot of major brands have teamed up to fight AIDS in Africa through the sale of red colored products. From iPods to Gap t-shirts, Armani watches to American Express cards, Motorola cell phones to Converse shoes, you can buy a specially designated red product and a portion of the sale goes to the Global Fund.

They say that your money will be used for antiretroviral treatment, but it implies on their website that they outsource the funds through grants to groups who are fightng AIDS. One of the included expenses is “counseling.” I haven’t been able to find anything about condom use, pro or con. Anyone know if buying one of the red products is going to support the distribution of condoms?

It seems hard to say whether or not condoms are being promoted in the programs financed by Product Red.

The money raised is given to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Apparently, the funds are earmarked to go only to HIV/AIDS programs. It is possible that the funds are also earmarked to go to programs which do not promote condoms. But the model of ABC (Abstinence, Be faithful, Condoms) is pretty much the standard, so in the absence of a specific disclaimer I would assume that some of the Product Red money winds up funding condom distribution.
