Does 'repetition' = 'vain repitition'?

By the way, what’s wrong with looking at the Psalms? They’re inspired, inerrant scripture, which means that they’re God-breathed, and therefore useful for instruction. If the psalmist prayed repetitively (and he did), then I see no reason why I shouldn’t.
I’m saying that heathens repeat their prayers. If you’d like to repeat yours over and over and over and over and over again like the heathens… that’s your choice.

You’re also saying you like to ignore both scriptural content and context - which is also your choice, I suppose.

Again, heathens repeat their prayers vainly, because heathens don’t pray to the true God. The repetition isn’t vain, but rather, their prayers to a false deity and their intention to be heard by their many words (and perhaps even their intention to be seen as more pious and/or dedicated than those around them).

Please, exegete the scriptures quoted from the Psalms and Revelation in which repetitive prayers are uttered without a single condemnation from God.

I will pray to the Father as it says in Mat 6:6
I will not use vain repetitions as the heathen do Mat 6:7
I don’t need to repeat myself because God already knows what I am praying for even before I ask so repitition is not necessary.Mat 6:8

Mat 6:6
But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Mat 6:7
But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen [do]: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

Mat 6:8
Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

I think I must be mistaken as to your intent.

Scripture shows us that in heaven the angels are repeating the same thing over and over and over again. Are you comparing the praise the angels give to God to be the same as heathens:confused:

Comparing Pauls prayers for the same thing three times to that of heathens?

Comparing the prayers of Christ to prayers of heathens for He repeated Himself too?

Do you believe repeating oneself is the same as vain repetition?

Pray in private as Jesus instructed. Growing up as a Pentecostal, it always seemed to me that the Loud Praying Out Loud was a competition to who could stand out the more. There was even this one guy that spoke in tongues saying the same thing over and over and over and over.
Mat 6:7

the context is public vanity.

Yes be not like them. what are they like? They are vain. Praying out loud for attention and awareness of their peers.

I already know what you think of Matthew 6:6-8. What about Revelation 4 and Psalm 136? Is the psalmist guilty of vain repetition, and are the four living creatures surrounding the throne also guilty of vain repetition?

What about Church Hymns that have a “Chorus” or a 'Refrain"…vain repitition in prayer by song?

Do you ever pray in church, or with other Christians in a prayer or Bible study group? Or, do you always and only enter into your closet (or bedroom, or other suitably private place) to pray?

And Christ’s agony in the garden,

Matt 26:44 “He left them and withdrew again and prayed a third time, saying the same thing again.”

Indeed… was Christ guilty of grave sin by repeating his prayer?

(thanks for reminding me of this scripture, Cecilia! 👍)

You’re welcome! It’s one of my faves, and it also reminds me not to expect the type of answers that *I think *God should give to my prayers…which I can always use some work on!

Hi Maria, I pray to the Father ONLY just like Jesus said to do. And just like Mary did in Acts. I don’t have any standardized prayers. I just model them after the Our Father. I know I don’t have to be repititious because God already knows what I’m praying for.

All in favor of letting God be God, raise your hands.:bowdown2:
Again, Paul repeated the same prayer. Do you think you understand better than Paul? Angels in heaven repeat the same prayer. Do you understand better than they do?

Are you really comparing them to heathens?

Why don’t you post those scriptures and we’ll compare them to what heathens do. In fact, why don’t you post the instructions to the rosary and we’ll compare that too.

Absolutely, God can do whatever He wants! :bowdown2:

But do you think Jesus was setting an example that we should not follow?
Would you mind posting the instructions on how to do the rosary. I’d like to compare that to the Muslim way of praying.

Would you answer my question first? Was Christ setting an example in the Garden that we should not follow?

You can find instructions on praying the rosary all over the internet. The point of the rosary is the meditation on the scenes from Christ’s life as we use prayers to mark the passage of time.

Every time I pray the rosary I reflect on the Gospel differently, and I learn a different lesson about God and life. The words are repetitious, but they’re only a small part of the prayer taking place.

Frankly, there are lifelong Catholics who don’t understand the rosary…I used to be one of them. I don’t think you can claim to understand this prayer if you have never prayed it.

Muslims and Buddhists may use beads to count prayers…this is not news. But they’re not meditating on the life of Christ as they do it, so you can’t compare. It’s like saying a cat and a dog are the same because they both have feet.
