I read a thread about Ouija boards a couple of weeks ago on CAF and it reminded me of my scary experiences with the Occult. So I began praying the Rosary every night b4 bed about 2 weeks ago.

I have noticed that everytime I begin the Rosary, thoughts go through my head like, “Did I remember to turn of the bathroom light…I must check.” or “I need a glass of water.”

I turn the thoughts away and just continue praying b/c I realize that these are distractions from a dark forces.

After praying the Rosary for 2 weeks, I began to feel a big tug to church. I haven’t gone in 3 months b/c I have a very active son (toddler) and I’m afraid to go :o I went to church last Sunday with my kids.

So, my DD and I were walking past our church yesterday and she told me that she wanted to go in and see Jesus. I was taking her up the stairs to the church and this man began to say to me, “Don’t go in there! You can’t go in there!”

I said “Why?” b/c I thought maybe something was going on inside or something. He repeated, “Don’t go in there!”

He was this creepy looking guy. I ignored him and my DD and I went in to say hi to Mother Mary, St. Joseph and St. Theresa. Then we said hi to Jesus.

After we left, I couldn’t help, but wonder if that guy telling me not to go in was a coincidence or not It kinda scared me. I was actually nervous when we were in the church, that this man would follow us in there.

When I left the church, the man wasn’t there.

The Devil definitely gets angry when we pray the rosary. I remember an excerpt of the important treatise, “The Secret of the Rosary” by St. Louis de Montfort that everytime we pray the rosary, the devil stands by to ensure we stumble and make a mistake. St. Louis de Montfort therefore advises that we pray the rosary slowly, making a breath lasting for about half a second after saying each prayer. Only then will the Devil fail in his attempts and will be truly ticked off. If I remember correctly, St. Louis de Montfort said that 1 well-said rosary was better than 1000 poorly-said rosaries, and I think he has a point.

For me at least, my main weakness with the rosary is that I fear that an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary will appear behind me. I keep looking back all the time. If I do pray it, it’s in the morning. I seldom pray during nightime. It’s something I’ve always struggled with ever since I started reading about the miracles associated with Catholicism :o, and I’ve said that if I ever saw the Blessed Virgin Mary face-to-face, I would faint that day.

You might be interested in St. de Montfort’s book. It’s free online (although I only found out about that after I bought the book). It’s a great and easy read; nothing too complicated: rosary-center.org/secret.htm

I’ve also read that everytime we pray the rosary, we basically give the Blessed Virgin Mary a “crown of roses” that are eternal and everlasting. Hence the word “rosary”, which derives from the root word “rose”.

Well, I don’t think our Blessed Mother will approach us that way. There has been instances of people who have been visited by our Blessed Mother that feel a sense of peace and tranquility before she appears to them. I understand too because I lay awake at night and I most often times feel a presence in my home when the lights are off. But come to think about it, our Holy Mother is full of love that I really don’t think she’ll pop up in front of us all of a sudden. She wouldn’t do that to us. Believe me, I would love to see her but I feel only when we are truly ready to see her will she make her appearance. God Bless You!!!

I assure you that if the Blessed Mother were to appear to you, it wouldn’t be a bad scary experience 🙂 and also - very, very few people get to have an apparition of her. And when it happens it’s always for a reason. I know reading the lives of the Saints it seems there are constant miracles happening everywhere, 😉 but that is the lives of the Saints. Many lives of ordinary Catholics are less ‘extraordinary’, though also grace-filled 🙂 the greatest miracle is the Eucharist, which we experience at every Mass.

God bless

Yes, I totally do believe that the devil hates when we pray the Rosary. All the more reason to pray it daily 👍 (something that is my goal right now!)

Serap, we were talking about the Rosary on the marriage/submission thread and I didn’t want to take it too much more OT so I thought I’d reply over here about what you said re: being distracted when you pray. This happens to me, too, a LOT of the time. During the times where you believe it’s the Holy Spirit leading you to insightful introspection, then I agree- just go with it. But if you ever don’t want to be distracted, I learned a couple of tips ( think from Fr. Benedict Groeschel) that have helped me a lot. Not sure if they work for everyone, but here goes:

First thing, if you’re on a certain mystery…let’s say it’s the Annunciation…try to picture in your head the Annunciation happening…The Angel appearing to Mary, etc. Like it’s a scene happening in front of you and you’re standing off to the side, just being there and just watching. Try to picture/wonder what she must have felt, and what the whole scene might have looked like. Look at it as an observer, above all. Just pet the picture in your head and stay there, watching, as an observer. I thought that was kinda odd advice but I tried it and it was so great. Not only did it help my getting distracted, but it opened up all kinds of new insights.

Second tip he had was, if you feel your mind wandering to silly things (like what you’re going to make for dinner or what you’re going to wear tomorrow, etc.), then you can use each of the Hail Mary’s as anchors, pulling you back in. Just bring your mind in from the distractions and focus on the words themselves…"Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee…"

Don’t know if those will work for you, but they did for me so thought I’d pass them along. 🙂

Broadly-speaking, the Devil gets angry when we turn even one thought to God. He does not want us to pray, or even consider the things of God. This is why masturbation, fornication, and so many other things are beloved by Satan! In each instance of sin, it is a focus of your mind on something created, not the Creator. The whole gist of Satan’s rebellion, after all, was putting focus on himself, and isolating himself, so he wants us to do that to ourselves. True love - true God - is relationship, community, friendship, and unity in joy. Praying, then, is completely against Satan’s unholy plan.

The rosary must be especially hated by Satan, given the above. 🙂 He doesn’t want us contemplating the mystical unifying events that truly sanctified humanity.

When I converted back, I went to St. Francis of Assisi for masses and confession. They have this large mosaic on the wall of Mary in Heaven, holding the baby Jesus in her arms and Jesus is plunging a spear into a serpent. I was an occultist for a long time too. When I went to confession, I cried because I had 15 years of sin I needed to get absolved and I did. But even with absolution, I asked the friar what I could do to keep the Devil away. And what he basically said was I can do 10 Haily Mary when I wake up and go to bed everyday. He said that Mary aids us in defeating the serpent like in that mural.

Here’s a pic of the mural if you want to be awe inspired. 😉

Like you, I dabbled in the Occult when I was young. I have witnessed things from Hell as I unintentionally created portals that were very evil. I didn’t know how dangerous some of my actions were and even when things happened, I would just tell myself it was all in my head and that it wasn’t really happening.

Now that I look back, I realize that it was all not a coincidence and it was all real. It really scares me now.

Something beautiful happened to me the other night. On my honeymoon, my husband and I went on a cruise and we stopped at Ephesus. While we were there, a tour guide told us to make sure we visited Mother Mary’s house. We got into a cab and asked to quickly go there before visiting Ephesus.

When we got there, it was beautiful. Nuns were singing beautifully and we went inside. Once inside, all I could feel was the Holy Spirit all around me. The air was heavy b/c it was so Holy. I didn’t want to leave. It was so beautiful. We took lots of pictures and when I left, I knew I had just seen something very important.

So 2 nights ago, I became fearful again while praying and then a very vivid memory of this house came into my mind and I knew it was Mother Mary telling me to put myself back in that house when I become afraid. I do that now everytime I feel afraid and my fear goes away. I visualize myself talking to Mother Mary in that house and I am filled with such calm.

I am so thankful that Mother Mary gave me this gift.

Just to ensure that your words are not misinterpreted, we had an interesting discussion regarding prayer in an adult bible study class I attended based on the following line from the catechism:

2111* Superstition is the deviation of religious feeling and of the practices this feeling imposes. It can even affect the worship we offer the true God, e.g., when one attributes an importance in some way magical to certain practices otherwise lawful or necessary. To attribute the efficacy of prayers or of sacramental signs to their mere external performance, apart from the interior dispositions that they demand, is to fall into superstition.*

That is, since prayer is defined succinctly in the CC as below, the point of the Rosary is to raise your mind and heart to God. Although one does this through the specific prayers and contemplation of mysteries, it’s inconsequential whether one ‘stumbles’ and ‘makes a mistake’ in the external performance- inadvertently skip a Hail Mary, mispronounce a few words. This goes back to the concept that prayer is not a magic ritual, we are imperfect beings no matter how perfectly we execute the external performance of a prayer it is the rasing of our heart that is important. 1,000 imperfect Rosaries could just as easily be 1,000 which are perfectly executed if the focus is on making no ‘mistakes’ in the words/prayers vice raising our hearts and minds to God.

*2559 "Prayer is the raising of one’s mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God."2 But when we pray, do we speak from the height of our pride and will, or “out of the depths” of a humble and contrite heart?3 He who humbles himself will be exalted;4 humility is the foundation of prayer, Only when we humbly acknowledge that "we do not know how to pray as we ought,"5 are we ready to receive freely the gift of prayer. "Man is a beggar before God."6 *

Note another line from the CC, which emphasizes the internal aspect of prayer over the manner, form or external performance.

2562 Where does prayer come from? Whether prayer is expressed in words or gestures, it is the whole man who prays. But in naming the source of prayer, Scripture speaks sometimes of the soul or the spirit, but most often of the heart (more than a thousand times). According to Scripture, it is the heart that prays. If our heart is far from God, the words of prayer are in vain.

Yet again, the CC notes on the danger of overemphasis on external performance:

2726 *In the battle of prayer, we must face in ourselves and around us erroneous notions of prayer. Some people view prayer as a simple psychological activity, others as an effort of concentration to reach a mental void. ***Still others reduce prayer to ritual words and postures. **Many Christians unconsciously regard prayer as an occupation that is incompatible with all the other things they have to do: they “don’t have the time.” Those who seek God by prayer are quickly discouraged because they do not know that prayer comes also from the Holy Spirit and not from themselves alone.

But to the OP, the CC does reflect that your issue is one that affects us all. It may be worthwhile for you to review the CC because it expands on this and other issues surrounding prayer.

2729 The habitual difficulty in prayer is distraction. It can affect words and their meaning in vocal prayer; it can concern, more profoundly, him to whom we are praying, in vocal prayer (liturgical or personal), meditation, and contemplative prayer. To set about hunting down distractions would be to fall into their trap, when all that is necessary is to turn back to our heart: for a distraction reveals to us what we are attached to, and this humble awareness before the Lord should awaken our preferential love for him and lead us resolutely to offer him our heart to be purified. Therein lies the battle, the choice of which master to serve.

I think the answer to this (old) question is most definitely yes. I converted to Catholicism at Easter this year. This was after I ended up in a mental hospital after spending many years visiting mediums/clairvoyants and tarot readers. I start a course to become one myself, when literally all hell broke loose. I knew what I’d done, after I’d done it. The only way for me to be saved was to convert. I was praying the Rosary daily and many days I could barely function, let alone pray the Rosary completely and correctly. However, I knew I needed to do it. The closer the day came to my conversion, and the more I prayed, the harder satan worked to destroy me. From googling how to suicide, to nearly being completely taken over again by demons, he fought me every hour of the day. Praying the Rosary and reading the bible daily got me through to conversion day, and then, partaking in the Eucharist weekly (and sometimes twice weekly), now has me totally and utterly free for the first time in my life. satan absolutely hates the rosary as it brings our hearts and minds closer to Jesus, and helps us see the truth - which is the last thing he wants

May God Bless You Always Forever and Ever, Amen! There is a thread here on “True Devotion.” It is a wonderful thread. I hope you go there because it is all about the Rosary and true devotion to the Blessed Mother. It may even be the most important thread here. The Rosary is “my weapon” said Padre Pio.

Thank you BluesPicker 🙂 It truly is a most powerful weapon. I know it helped in the fight for my soul and my mind. I cannot understand why Mother Mary interceded for me, but I know she did. And until the day I die, I will try to help others with mental health issues utilise this wonderful too against satan we have. I’m not sure how yet, but I know I will. I will definitely go to that thread - thank you

Definitely. Genesis 3:15 says “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” Jesus himself call Mary as “Woman”.
Revelation 12:1 says “A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.” and
Revelation 12:5 says “And she delivered the Son, the Male who was to Shepherd all the nations with a rod of iron. And her Son was caught up to God and to his throne.”

If you connect all these verses, you will know why devil is angry. Read Revelation chapter 12 in full.

Revelation 12:13 says “When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child.” and
Revelation 12:15 says “The serpent spewed water out of his mouth after the woman like a river, that he might cause her to be carried away by the stream.”

Devil is a liar. So he will play all tricks to get people away from Jesus and Mary. He twist verses… Will make people believe Mary is an idol and praying to her is idol worship, as he deceived Eve.

James 1:12 says “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” So keep in faith and prayer.

“Every hail mary is a blow on my head” says Devil. Please read if intereseted acatholiclife.blogspot.com/2006/09/value-of-rosary-by-fr-gabriel-amorth.html

God bless

anytime you get close to God and reject him he gets angry.

Good for you, opening poster, for beginning to pray the rosary.
Our biggest protection from the devil is confession and mass, so you should consider these too. Maybe it is significant that someone tried to keep you from going into a church.
