Does Saturday afternoon wedding count as Sunday obligation?

I just did a little research on this last week prior to a Saturday wedding. It appears that even canon lawyers are divided on the issue, on what constitutes “afternoon”. Some say the Mass needs to be at 4 or after; some say noon or after. And we are left to choose which one we will follow.
No, I don’t think so. As I alluded to earlier, it’s the local Ordinary who is allowed to determine the time of day. If he specified nothing to the contrary for loacl use, the standard “4pm rule” would apply. In any case, it’s certainly not an individual decision for the laity. IOW, one doesn’t get to choose which rule to follow.

That is true IF you are a Bishop. It doesn’t mean that each Catholic can decide for himself which Masses count for Sunday obligation. It means that the Bishop has some options to choose from when deciding the time for his own diocese.
