Does she really deserve to be there?

I’m looking for opinions here.

As some of you are aware from previous posts, my FIL’s wife is really not a very nice person and needs help.

DH and I tried to explain to him right from the very beginning 3 years ago when he married her that we both had a very bad feeling and we were right.

Bad stuff went down, she opened her mouth and let stuff fly out and caused a lot of trouble for my DH and I. of course, my FIL would always defend her.

Time passed and only in the last 3 months has he realized what my DH and I have been talking about all along. DH took him out to play pool one evening this past January, just after his birthday. My FIL said to my DH “I really wish I would have learned from the past 2 times!” My DH asked him what he was talking about and my FIL replied “I thought I was marrying one person and now I realized she’s someone completely different than who I thought she was!” This is my FIL’s 3rd marriage.

About 2 weeks ago she posted a status on facebook that sounded like she was going to kill herself. I have her in my contacts on there as does my DH but she doesn’t talk to either of us and we don’t talk to her because she causes too much trouble. Even though I don’t talk to her when I saw that post I knew that she truly needed help and I knew that I had to let my FIL know. So I called him on his lunch hour to tell him what I read. He was quite stunned that she did that and felt that she has improved drastically. I explained that if she improved drastically she wouldn’t be talking like that and she still wouldn’t be causing trouble for his almost 3 years later!

The woman doesn’t work because she claims her shoulder hurts too much and that she can’t find a job. She yells at my SIL when she goes in the fridge to make a sandwich and makes her feel like **** for taking the last of the meat or whatever. My SIL is on disability because she injured her foot very badly but she still contributes financially to the house. My FIL’s wife also doesn’t like being alone and bickers and whines every time my FIL wants to go do something on his own or go hunting with his brothers. There’s various people in the family that she doesn’t like and will keep him from and won’t even take him to see his own Mom in the nursing home because she knows that she doesn’t like her very much.

So here’s my question.

This past September when my DH and I moved into our new home his stepmom started talking to me again on her own out of the blue after not talking to me for a year and a half. My DH and I went along with it and showed her as much love and kindness as we possibly could. In October of 2013 DH and I discovered that I was pregnant and due in June. We decided to keep it a secret so we could surprise everyone at Christmas time. Although this woman is not my DH’s biological Mother, we decided to still honor her and give her an opportunity to be Grandma. So we bought her and my FIL each a bib that said I love my grandma and grandpa and put them into boxes to give to them as gifts. DH’s stepmom had apparently gotten into some kind of fight with her own daughter earlier in the day and she was refusing to come visit the next day. So DH’s stepmom hid in the bedroom and wouldn’t come out. We kept trying to convince her to and she ignored us and wouldn’t come out. She even swore at my FIL at one point when he tried to get her to come out. She was really holding us up from things we needed to do. She would only text us and that was it. She wouldn’t even come out to get any food. She would text my FIL to come bring it to her. Anyway my FIL finally stormed in there and told her the news. She texted me and congratulated me but told me that this had nothing to do with her that she was NOT the Grandmother and was just my FIL’s wife.

My DH and I were furious and left. The next day, Christmas Day, she sent me another text stating that she found a bib there that I needed to come and pick up because she was not the grandmother and that I had to give it to the real grandmother and then she compared my DH and I to her own son and daughter saying that they were doing it the smart way and waiting until they had their own houses and a bunch of money and steady jobs and were married. Like really? My husband and I both have steady jobs. He makes a little more than I do because he’s in the Navy. We rent a military PMQ house. We’re not rich, but we are comfortable and have a brand new very reliable car. Couldn’t figure this one out.

Anyway…

I’m due to have a baby boy on June 21st. Do you think we should allow her to come to the hospital? I personally don’t want her there because she has and continues to cause way too much stress and I know for a fact that if she opened her mouth and said the wrong thing which she usually always does, my Mom would not hesitate to say something to her or even hall off and smoke her in the face if she got mad enough. My DH doesn’t want her there because he feels after all the trouble she has caused even when we tried to be kind and show her nothing but love, she basically crapped on us. The only issue is that my FIL doesn’t drive and she’s his only method of transportation. MY DH is willing to go pick him up but we think that she may cause a stink because she’s not allowed to go or that he may refuse to go if she can’t.

What should we do?

I would absolutely not want her at the hospital.

She seems to always cause trouble, so she will do it to you again, regardless of what the arrangements are for the visits.

Do what is right for your family. If nobody wants her there - don’t have her there. It really is as simple as that. Such people can never be pleased and the best thing to do is to not even bother trying.

You can’t stop her from coming to the hospital. It is a public place. And if you tell her she isn’t allowed to come, she could come anyway and pitch a fit.

You can stop her from coming into *your *room.

I would allow her to come in. But that is just me. I would wait for her to do something. At that point, my husband would usher everyone out. “maryjk is tired, guys, lets give her a break.” After a bit, only *family *members would be allowed back in. “Sorry Doctor’s orders.”

You could also keep her out of your room from the start, “doctor’s orders.”

My doctor asked me what I wanted, then told me that he would make that his policy for our child’s birth.

If it were me I’d have no one there but myself, my husband, and the hospital staff. Have the baby, recover a bit (shower, eat, have a nap), and then allow visitors. It’s fair to everyone, there’s much less chaos and potential for drama, and it gives you and your husband the time together with each other and the baby minus distractions.

Let me get this strait. You have a mean, horrible manipulative mentally unstable, possibly suicidal person that you wonder if during the first few hours of an innocent babies life you want to introduce this person into a situation that is emotional, and vulnerable?

There was a whole lot of drama in that OP. And almost all of it is voluntary on your part.🤷

I would probably suggest to to your father-in-law that when the time comes, it would be preferable not to have her come because of all the problems. I probably wouldn’t say anything now since a lot can happen between now and then but if everything is normal and goes well in the hospital, usually you are release fairly quickly and I wouldn’t worry about who is coming to see you at the hospital, you are not going to feel like having visitors after having a baby. All of this is much ado about nothing and needless anxiety over little things that are couple of months away and things can change quickly. Maternity wards are pretty secure places in hospitals and they aren’t these open areas where anyone and anything can just come walking in to see the new moms and babies. I work in a hospital. You seem to be letting yourself get sucked into these stupid petty issues, focus on having a healthy baby, delivery and all of that instead of trying to manage who is coming to see you at the hospital when you may be release in 24 hours anyway.

You should always do the charitable thing. Try not to argue so much. Sounds like everyone in this story is a little at fault.

Tell your doctor you don’t want anyone there except your husband. She is absolutely the last thing you need that day. It sounds like your FIL will understand.

This woman needs psychiatric help, but that doesn’t mean you have to let her ruin the day.

No. You should pick him up like you suggested. She of her own free will said she did not want to be the grandmother.

I wouldn’t allow her to come, if she causes a stink tell her why she isn’t invited. I think sometimes it is worth being brutally honest.

Why does everyone have to be at the hospital anyway?
I understand your Mom being there, but why does everyone else need to be hanging around?
In any case there’s no guarantee how long labor will last. Your husband can go contact everyone as soon as things happen.

I didn’t have to tell my parents-in-law to respect us with at least a day, or even half a day.
They considered that at least the first day belonged to my husband, my child, and me. The mother is very tired after the birth and needs rest, and ones own husband and child or other children, but not the wider family.
This is the custom in all my family, no discussion necessary.
A little space for the baby and the baby’s parents, and everyone contacted, but they respect that the immediate little family needs and deserves a little time together and some rest before everyone begins visiting.

God bless your own family, and God bless the other family members.

I agree with this. I don’t really understand the concept of having people waiting around at the hospital - or worse, being WITH the laboring woman - before the baby is born. Everyone has their own set of preferences, but no one should take offense at new parents not wanting to include ANYONE in their birth, and no one should take offense if the laboring mother wants her mom there, but no other relatives. So no, I wouldn’t include her at the hospital, but I wouldn’t include dh’s father either, and I may or may not include my own parents. You decide when you are willing to let her see the baby, and then after the baby is born, call your father and TELL him when you’d like him to come. This can be in the hospital, or at home after you get home. Whatever makes you the most comfortable and the least stressed.

I totally agree, and to be perfectly honest I think exactly nobody (including the doctor, nurses, etc) has a ‘right’ to be there. Those first few hours are going to be our time to get to know our new little one before introducing him/her to the world. And (less importantly) I want to be awake and aware enough to remember introducing my baby and my extended family… and recovered enough to at least try to control my panic about every little thing. 😃

At the hospital during labor? No, I wouldn’t want that. At the hospital the next day, after you’ve gotten some rest and after the nurses have been alerted to the situation, so that staff can monitor and kick out visitors if needed? I’d be okay with that. Hospital visitors shouldn’t stay long.

As to the question if she deserves it, it is also entirely possible that she won’t think she deserves it, especially given how she responded to the bibs. If she stops by for a short visit, be cordial. If she arrives whule you are in labor, request privacy. Mothers in labor deserve privacy. You deserve privacy if you desire it.

I agree with this. I don’t really understand the concept of having people waiting around at the hospital - or worse, being WITH the laboring woman - before the baby is born. .
I have absolutely no intention of allowing anyone other than my husband and medical staff in the room before the birth and during delivery. I was referring to after delivery.

Ok then. I would play it by ear. If it comes up ahead of time, let whoever asks know that you don’t know how you’ll be feeling right after the baby is born, so you’re not sure if you’ll be taking visitors at the hospital or not. Then just decide when the moment is upon you. Your dh can be the one to tell his father, “Jazzy isn’t feeling up to visitors right now, but we are looking forward to introducing baby to you when we get home.” Of course, the nice thing about a visit at the hospital rather than at your home is that it will be easier to keep it short. When you are ready for the visit to be over, you can “need your rest” or “need to nurse the baby” and thank them for visiting. Not that you can’t do those things at home, but in a hospital where you JUST gave birth, and where there aren’t really other places to hang out, it is easier for you to tell people to leave.

I have absolutely no intention of allowing anyone other than my husband and medical staff in the room before the birth and during delivery. I was referring to after delivery.
If everything goes well, you will be out before you know it which can be within 24 hours. Again this is needless worry about the future isn’t healthy. Plan to have no one come except the husband and then set up a visit when home with the others in the family. If she doesn’t want to come, then so be it. I work in a hospital and maternity wards are some of the most secure places, not just anyone can walk in to visit. If she is fickled as you have made her out to be, she might change her mind once the baby comes because most everyone loves seeing a new baby, they are simply irresistable. Let go of the past and move on beyond all these people.

I have absolutely no intention of allowing anyone other than my husband and medical staff in the room before the birth and during delivery. I was referring to after delivery.
I didn’t imagine that you were intending to allow others into the delivery room, why should the family be in the hospital during that time with the pressure that they would be in to see the baby immediately or soon afterwards. .After delivery the mother needs rest and she and her husband need to enjoy the wonder, and to bond with the baby.

Family should respect that they have the right to be told, but they would be charitable to allow at least the rest of the day to the baby and the baby’s parents. My family always checks that the mother is ready for visitors, but wouldn’t dream of intruding on those first hours. It’s the parent’s baby, the parents great event, and they should be allowed that time to appreciate that before others come in. Grandparents do not have the same rights over the child or the marriage as the parents and child/children of that marriage.

Anyway, we all have our opinions. 🙂

So DH’s stepmom hid in the bedroom and wouldn’t come out. We kept trying to convince her to and she ignored us and wouldn’t come out. She even swore at my FIL at one point when he tried to get her to come out. She was really holding us up from things we needed to do
My suggestion: stop worrying about everything this woman does. Ignore her. Don’t give her anything or ask her for anything. Be distant and courteous. You don’t need drama in your life.
God bless you and your new baby.
