I was challenged in a different thread to ask this question. This has also come up a few times in discussions with non-Catholics.

Does the Church teach that Jews and Muslims can be saved through their own traditions? I know the answer, but thought I’d ask it here to see what you all think.

Ditto on the Catechism, and look at the footnotes in those paragraphs for corresponding docs from Vatican II and otherwise. Catholicism’s theology is a very deep one in which the Church definitively professes that anyone saved is done so through Christ, however, we believe there are extenuating means available by the mercy of God by which someone invincibly ignorant of the Gospel can be saved, whether it be a Jew, Muslim, or a lonely Aborigine with little other human contact in his life. By following the dictates of their hearts to do the will of God as they understand it, they are united, by extenuating means, to Christ (though they know it not) and well can receive a baptism of desire.

If you are asking if Catholics can be saved through the Church, then the answer is yes.
I re-framed the question to get clarity on your meaning of “through their own traditions.” I assume you meant more than “can Jews and Muslims be saved?”

Yes, I’m not asking if a Jew or Muslim can be saved. I am asking if a Jew can be saved through Judaism and can a Muslim be saved through Islam. If so, how can a Muslim or Jew be saved through Islam or Judaism?

So I agree with the other posters. Salvation comes only through Jesus, and uniting to Jesus is not a part of those traditions. Their salvation would come in a way known only to God.

Yes,

If a Jew or Muslim is truly in search of God, and he/she has never learned the truth of Catholicism And rejected it. Then Jesus can and will save him/her. Someone more knowledgable than me on this subject can probaly state this more elequently.

So, what you are saying is that a Jew or Muslim who is invincibly ignorant of Christ’s Gospel or Church might still become part of His Church and be saved by Christ through an implicit desire to do God’s will. Is that a fair summary of your position?

Yes,

Again, someone else can state it better, but Jesus’ Mercy is UNFATHOMABLE.

Jesus can save you without you understanding that He’s saving you. Our Lord is a mystery. Amen
