Hello,
I am a 21 young woman, and I have endometriosis, a reproductive system disorder. Endometriosis is when the tissue on the inside of the uterus ends up on the outside, in the cavity of the womb. This causes pain, and in my case, moderate to severe pain. It is spontaneous, meaning that it can appear at any time of my mentrual cycle, not just when I have my period.
I went through the prescribed treatment for me, which was shutting down my ovaries, putting me into a ‘fake’ menopause for six months. The severity of the side effects caused my quality of life to plummet and even more pain, which required near narcotic medications. Not the over the counter kind. I was faced at continuing my treatment and possibly dropping out of college and developing another medical condition, or stopping the treatment. I stopped two months into the treatment, believing I should not be in pain if possible.
Now, the only treatment left for me that is safe and available for my case, (meaning that I am a stage one endometriosis, rather htan stage three, where I could ask for surgery for removal of the endometrial implants in my pelvic region), is birth control. Birth control lessens my period, and taken continously, for three months at a time, offers my endometriosis only four times a year to grow. My disease progresses at each period, so by stopping it, the progression of the endo is stopped.
I know that it is against the Catholic Church for women to use birth control, but is there any exemption for women that use it only to control their reproductive health, not for traditional contraceptive use? There really is nothing out there for me at this time besides this.
Besides, a flip side for me, if I don’t use birth control, I could possibly become infertile. Endometriosis is one of the major culprits in women unable to get pregnant.
