There is an Ordinariate parish (the only one I have heard of that does this) that has from the becgaining, when the now priest was in the process of becoming a Catholic priest, would always serve wine after every catechism class to around 10 members interested in becoming Catholic from the Anglican church.
Now for several years at every event, including baby showers and always on Sundays they have a wine hour. After someone complained the priest deleted the wine announcement and now has coffee hour between the earlier Mass and the 11:00 AM Mass and the wine hour after the 11:00 AM one, however, it is not announced.
It appears from his announcements that he seems to be only interested in Catholic singles or young couples who are already completed in their faith. Also it appears that most of these events are related to having alcohol.
There doesn’t seem to be much going for the ordinary older or middle aged Catholic, unless the person has the financial means or talents that can be used at this particular community.
This disturbs several former Anglicans as this is not Anglican Patrimony, nor is it the norm.
We need to evangelize only Catholics who have not completed their sacraments or welcome those back who have left the Church. That includes all Catholics and not to seem to have an agenda to grow a very small community larger by encouraging our youth to drink alcohol.
There are several Ordinariate parishes that are very serious about their Catholic faith and don’t use gimmicks to bring in people. We are just concerned that when Catholics and Protestants know of this type of evangelizing it will give a bad name to all the Ordinariates which is not fair as they are doing a wonderful job of pastoring their flocks.
Does anyone know of any guidelines for parishes in the US, England etc. that speak to this issue?
We who are concerned are not against alcohol being served at celebrations, dinners, events etc. or outside of Mass every Sunday etc. The parish I attend does at special events serve wine with the meal.
