Does the Church make errors?

To give an example that nobody will really care about (because probably most people don’t know): In the early 1900’s, Popes Pius X and XI promulgated a new revision of the Roman Breviary that had a totally novel redistribution of the Psalter and many simplifications.

The arrangement of the Psalms was totally unlike ANYTHING that had ever been done in Western liturgy for 1900 or so years.
I often use this example when the question of the document Quo Primum arises which says that the Tridentine missal is to be used “in perpetuity,” with many arguing that the Tridentine missal cannot be changed or revised because of said “in perptuity” clause. When I respond that the document Quod a Vobix has the exact same clause for “in perpetuity” for the breviary that Quo Primum has for the Tridentine missal, and yet it was changed, no one says a word about no pope having the authority to “change” it. Could it be because of the fact that Pope St. Pius X, the bulwark of “Traditionalism,” is the one who changed it, and that this fact would undermind this modern day notion of strict “Traditionalism?” Off topic, I know…I just may start a new thread on this.
Was it a bad idea and error in judgement? I personally think so.
Personally, I agree.

FCEGM,
What is the difference between Orthodox ahd Traditional Catholics?

jean
jean, are you referring to Ad Deum’s usage (I’m not sure how he’s using the words) or Eastern Orthodoxy and “Traditional” Catholics?

Another bad idea–and I offer this just as an opinion–was to come up with the Luminous Mysteries as an addition to the Rosary.

By increasing the mysteries to 20, it destroyed the intrinsic parallel between the Book of Psalms and the Rosary (which was also called the Psalter of our Lady–150 Aves and 150 Psalms).

It might have been better if Pope John Paul II had promulgated this devotion as the Chaplet of Luminous Mysteries or Rosary of Light, much as the Chaplet of Divine Mercy can be said with a Rosary.

And before people start throwing things at me, I am happy to spred the word that dear Batushka (as I call him) will be beatified on 2 April 2010, the 5th anniversary of his repose!

Read my thread entitled, GLORY, HALLELUIAH in the Eastern Catholic folder.

There are many kinds of errors.

The church has made many kinds of errors. Some very serious and great sins.

We have to get by that somehow.

But none of them have been in definitions of faith and morals.

It is interesting how you word this. As if it is some kind of escape clause.

thisle,
Are you blaming the errors on the Holy Spirit? 🙂
Of course people make errors God does not. Some folks choose to go their own way. Others follow without taking heed as to what is occuring. Now we have more following the follower of nothing.
It’s time to pray, then pick up your Bible and read it everyday. The Holy Spirit will be there to guide you. Questions? of course, ask your pastor.

God bless,
jean
Name even one error the Church has made in matters of faith and morals.

I think it does. The Catholic Church consists of human beings, who in of themselves, are full of errors. Unfortunately even the highest of people in the church have been guilty of falling to their desires… take for example the popes of the Middle ages who had accumulated vast amounts of personal wealth.

However, imho, the fact that none of the world’s sin has caused the Catholic Church to crumble to the ground and collapse shows that God is protecting it.
