I know that churches require donations to remain open (operational expenses etc)… but does the Catechism actually indicate that it’s required?
Under CCC 2043:I know that churches require donations to remain open (operational expenses etc)… but does the Catechism actually indicate that it’s required?
Under CCC 2043:
The fifth precept (“You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church”) means that the faithful are obliged to assist with the material needs of the Church, each according to his own ability.86
The faithful also have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to his own abilities.87
(more to be found in the Code of Canon Law…)
The CCC notes…“each according to his own abilities”…
A caveat is that this is not necessarily monetary support at all times. As certain people on occasion struggle with meeting their own expenses, material support to the Church may take other forms during those times (e.g. if you happen to have a nice garden, provide flowers for the altar). Nevertheless, we will always have destitute persons who will be able to offer no more than prayers.
