I know that churches require donations to remain open (operational expenses etc)… but does the Catechism actually indicate that it’s required?

Under CCC 2043:
The fifth precept (“You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church”) means that the faithful are obliged to assist with the material needs of the Church, each according to his own ability.86
The faithful also have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to his own abilities.87

A caveat is that this is not necessarily monetary support at all times. As certain people on occasion struggle with meeting their own expenses, material support to the Church may take other forms during those times (e.g. if you happen to have a nice garden, provide flowers for the altar). Nevertheless, we will always have destitute persons who will be able to offer no more than prayers.

I feel like the correct response is no, the Church does not require you to donate, God does. It is a commandment that has been around since the beginning of time.
The Church will struggle without your donations, but the Church does not collect bank statements and W-2 information to ensure you are tithing or even contributing at all. They may know you are not contributing, but if you aren’t, they don’t stop you from participating in communion or any of the social gatherings. So no, the Church does not require donations, they suggest it. It is a precept of the Church so if you are able to provide and you are not, you are in danger of a mortal sin, but the Church will not make you contribute.
Instead of asking if the Church requires it, ask how much of God’s money are you going to give back to Him and if you can’t make the 10% minimum, can you contribute in other ways such as time or talent? Ultimately this kind of question is between the person and God. Jesus was most pleased by the woman who only gave 2 pennies because it is all she had. The Church needs the donation and God asks for you to provide it if you can.
