I was in a conversation with a friend and the Eastern Church was brought up. We started to talk about the schism and the reconciliation. I could not get my head around a couple points and wanted some clarity. I have very little exposure to the Eastern Church except for a wedding I went to about 15 years ago. I never though there was a real difference. I was told that the Eastern Church does not honor the Sacraments that are performed by the Latin Right.

I need those who are reading to understand that these questions may not even be valid questions because they are based on lack of knowledge on my part and questions asked during a conversation. I strive for truth so if they are not valid questions please indicate that.
  1. Does the Easter Church recognize Sacraments performed in the Latin Right?
  2. Does the Easter Church believe Papal infallibility?

If by Eastern Church you mean Eastern Catholics, yes, I believe they do. If you refer to the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox, no they don’t.

That would be Rite, and in this case one would refer to the Roman rite church, or Latin church, or something like that.

As far as I can tell, all Eastern Catholics under the Pope must accept the validity of all Latin church sacraments. For Orthodox Catholics (not under the Pope) it is not required by their church that they believe these Latin Catholic sacraments are valid, and various individuals may have a variety of opinions on that subject.

Since you have posted this on a Catholic board I normally assume that you are asking about what Eastern Catholics believe, but you were actually not clear whether your friend was referring to Eastern Catholicism or Orthodox Catholicism.
  1. Does the Easter Church believe Papal infallibility?
According to Vatican Council I of 1870AD Eastern Catholics (under the Pope) must believe in both Papal infallibility and Papal universal jurisdiction, or they are excommunicated Latae Sententiæ (automatically).

Eastern Catholics, yes without reservation. Eastern Orthodox no in principle, but often yes in practice - depending, over history, on the political climate. A whole theory worthy of the stereotypical scholastics has been built in relatively recent times to explain this mixed practice.

I think it has to be admitted that there is some considerable disagreement about what this actually means. However, the Eastern Catholics can be said to have much the same view on this matter as Latin Catholics. And it is irrelevant to the EO’s, not in communion with Rome - so irrelevant that I am not sure the the nuances and the limitations of the dogma are appreciated by the Orthodox who reject it.

Actus. Going back 15 years you might have to figure out whether it was an Eastern Catholic Church (among which there are many - Ruthenian, Maronite, Ukrainian, etc.) or an Eastern Orthodox Church to which you went, and which church you are discussing now with your friend. They - Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox - are not both the same. The former are Eastern but Catholics in full communion. Some people trip on this difference though the churches will look similar and the liturgies, among others. 🙂

As an Eastern Catholic, I can take Communion in a Latin rite Catholic Church, just as Roman Catholics can in any Eastern Catholic Church.

Thank you for your responses. I meant Rite. Sorry I did not pay attention when I ran my spell check in Word.

I do mean the Eastern Orthodox Catholic Church.

And not that I look back it was a Byzantine form of the Mass.

Thanks for your responses.
