The Holy Spirit remains with us, except for where the black mark that the mortal sin made on your soul. The more mortal sin-the more black marks, and a smaller area for Him to dwell. So when you go to confession, the black mark is erased and the Holy Spirit fills you completely again.
This is what I was taught-it makes it may not be 100 percent accurate, but close.
