Does the human embryo have a soul?

The answer seems to depend on when you were born. Nowadays it’s very fashionable to say that fertilized eggs have souls (lot’s of hand waving required for twins).

Through out history, many Catholic theologians have proposed different times for when the soul appears. Including after the birth of the child.

The embryo is imbued with a soul at the moment of it’s conception. it is at that point that the two dna strands join and determine the characteristics of the newborn, so it is at that point that a new being is created. Upon creation, that child receives a soul.

I don’t know where you are getting your “facts,” but you are greatly misguided.

Actually,

Catholic theologians are been consist in that a soul is the animating principle of life.

If a material creature is alive, it, by definition, has a soul.

What theolgians were unclear about, since they had no insights into a living womb, was if the contents of the womb was alive. It certainly was when the baby moved or kicked, but they had no observational data on what was happening in a living womb prior to that.

Since we DO have insights now, we can clearly see that the embryo is living, by definition, it must have a soul.

Without the presence of a soul, matter cannot live.

In the case of twins, since both are alive, both have souls.

A soul is granted to an embryo at the moment of conception. There is no “waving of the hand” or other complication in Catholic Theology that was mentioned by a previous commenter.

This is one of the cornerstone beliefs that is a pillar of our faith. This is one of the most important reasons that we are against abortion. We believe that it is a life, that it has a soul, that it was created and loved by the Creator. The miracle of life isn’t just that man and woman can come together and create another person. The miracle is that man and woman, both spiritual beings in the physical body, through an act of love, evoke the Holy Spirit to move… And this person, regardless of how long they live in the physical world (even if they never are able to leave the mother’s womb) continues to live for eternity in the spiritual rhelm. It isn’t only about what we’ve created that is the miracle, it’s about what we have started.

It’s seriously some amazing stuff. 👍

You should consider reading some of the works of St Augustine. He was a firm believer that souls were not individually created but rather passed down through the generations.

And with respect to twins, the notion that a fertilized egg will have multiple souls is not widely accepted.

And don’t forget Adam, he was never a fertilized egg to begin with. So it appears that there were exceptions.

Is the moment of ‘conception’ defined as a natural conception? That is, let’s say that if scientists clone embryos outside, or inside the womb, or genetically modify and alter the human embryo. Is God bound to give that scientifically created cloned, or genetically modified ‘human’ embryo a soul? If He does, is it an animal soul, or a human soul, since it was not created by natural conception?

Don’t appreciate your tone, either. You can disagree with someone’s beliefs while still being respectful. “Hand waving” and “fashionable”, indeed. Some people simply need to tear others down to feel better about themselves, it seems. Shame on you.

Perhaps the very act of God imbuing a single fertilized egg with two souls is what causes the egg to divide into two and become identical twins? 🙂

Does God give every human being a soul, and if so, when?
Yes.
As to when… at the same time life begins. Everything that lives has a soul (either finite like plants and animals or in the case of humans, immortal, rational & spiritual. So the question then becomes, “when does life begin?”
Catechism of the Catholic Church:
Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person - among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life.
Now, setting aside Catholic teaching on the subject of when life begins and looking only at science for the answer still leaves us without a definitive answer to the question. Science can theorize on the matter but cannot offer any concrete conclusion as to the question. Therefore, if there is any doubt, doesn’t it makes sense to error on the side of caution and logically assume that life begins at conception?

Regarding twins, the more reasonable answer would be that the a new soul is “born” at the splitting of the embryo. That or the original dies and two new ones are “born”. The notion of a single embryo having two or more souls is illogical.

As others have noted, life = a soul. Where there is life there is a soul, and where there is human life there is a human soul. That would be the moment of conception onward.

Peace and God bless!

What about human embryos that are cloned inside or outside the womb by scientists?
Is God bound to give souls to the human creations of scientists? Cloned, or genetically modified into some sort of chimera, or other subhuman?

You have to remember that our understanding of the growth of a baby in the womb has changed over time as well, which is why the current teaching is that it is at conception, once it is viewed as a human (having both sets of dna to make it whole).

Not everything the ECF believed is doctrine.

This may just be a mystery that has yet to be solved, but perhaps like mommamaree suggested, it could be the cause of the split. We just don’t understand it yet. Maybe in some way the soul divides too, creating two souls, which may be why some people find that identical twins “share pain” even when they are miles away, but who knows.
And don’t forget Adam, he was never a fertilized egg to begin with. So it appears that there were exceptions.
It depends on how you view the creation story (literal or figurative). If literal, then the view would be that he was given a soul when God “breathed life into him”, essentially his conception and birth. If figurative and you believe in the guided evolution approach, then God would have chosen when to provide a soul, which could have been at any time during his life, including conception.

Doesn’t make much sense theologically since it can take over a week before the egg splits into two separate entities.

As far as the Catholic Church’s teachings, cloned humans are to be believed to have a soul, unique and individual from the person they were cloned from. Essentially, anyone that is considered human on the dna level is to be given the benefit of the doubt as to whether they have a human soul.

Though, in some areas of church philosophy, everything has some kind of soul, even things like rocks. But if this is to be believed, then it is only humans have a rational soul with a free will made in the image and likeness of God.

I don’t have a source right at my fingertips on the matter; however, it is my understanding that should “cloned humans” become a reality, they too will be given human souls by God, just as babies who are conceived via in vitro fertilization (IVF) are given human souls. That said, it should not be assumed that because God gave the baby a soul that the parents of the baby acted morally… nor can it be said that in the case you inquired about, that the scientist(s) would be acting morally by cloning a human being. Grave matter is most certainly present.

Would the same be said for embryos with anencephaly? They are technically alive and may have enough of a nervous system for autonomic functioning but not enough of a brain to ever achieve consciousness.

Unfortunately, there is no objectively definable “point” at which the DNA strands “join”. That is a process, which can be broken into an infinite number of time divisions, depending on how good your “clock”, (measuring device), is. The elements of the atoms which make up the DNA first approach each other, then, (while actually being almost completely empty space), begin to interact, when the electron clouds and electromagnetic fields begin to interect, in an increasingly relatively strong way. The “characteristics” of the newborn are not actually “determined” at that point anyway, as the “characteristics” change millions of times, depending on the transcription error rate in the RNA/DNA replication processes. You actually have no idea what that “point is”, as
a. you cannot define at what “pico-second”, (or shorter) it occurs, and
b. you have never observed it.
c. you cannot say, when exactly in the very complex PROCESS of DNA replication, God infuses the soul.

Twinning can occur up to two weeks after the egg and sperm first unite. When is the second soul infused ?

You’re whistling in the wind.

Of course he does. The soul is the principle that animates living beings, so by definition anything that’s alive has a soul.

Human beings exist from the moment the egg is fertilized, so we are given our souls at that moment.

As you say, you cannot define at what “pico-second” it occurs and since your info states that you are Episcopalian and obviously believe in God, I figure you would have to assume that the soul is infused at the earliest possible time. When the sperm and egg unite or when the “twin” splits. If not, you run the risk of tampering with God’s will. Surely this something that anyone who believes in God would not want to do.
