I suppose that the mormons should have laid down and died. šŸ™‚ Why would the mormons be non-violent when they had enemies trying to kill them? At that time, it was defend yourself or die…such was the american frontier.
You’re the one who said mormons were practicing civil disobedience, not me. Civil disobedience=nonviolence.

What Catholics thnk on this is red herring. YOU claimed that Mormons were not allowed to practice their faith by engaging in polygamy. So you were asked about same sex marrige…which the LDS Church fought VERY hard to prevent in California.

Or maybe you were not aware of that
I assume he ignored this since he’s not aware of the hypocrisy in his posts.

I’m guessing whatever history I’ll read, you’ll call it ā€œbiasedā€.

You could probably save me the trouble by letting me know who you think was motivated to kill all living LDS.

Edit to add, I’m from Missouri, and know all about the Extermination Order. It was also to ā€œdrive outā€ the LDS from MO.
What motivated the mobs from your home state? Ignorance which was ripe on the frontier. Ignorance massacred the indians and it led to intolerance of mormons. Also, the press was stirring up the pot against the mormons. The press was very hostile inciting the people against the mormons. Put this with ignorance and we have situation where people can lose their life.

I answered it previously. I have no idea what same sex marriage has to do with this post and your take on it.
lol…no, you did not answer it…apparently, you are ok with polygamy if a church claims it is part of their faith, but not ok with same sex marriage under the same theory

I would guess the swarming in of Mormons following a ā€œprophetā€ who claimed that God told him Mormons would own all the land…then a ā€œprophetā€ who brings in an army from Ohio to battle the folks from Misssouri and an LDS Leader who put out an extermination soeech against all missourians…

just a guess…

Practicing polygamy leads to many children…very dependent on one man…so, for the welfare of people, to allow polygamy is to jeopardize its welfare. Many Muslim countries are very poor because of polygamy. The discovery of oil has alleviated difficulties there.

America has had an inherent economic system that gave us freedom to survive. Would Mormonism have survived if it had begun some place else?

You’re right. The economic impact alone is something that should not be overlooked.

Look at those FLDS (yes, I know they aren’t LDS), and the number of kids they had, the amount of public assistance they received was staggering.

There is also the ā€œthrow away kidsā€. Too many male children spoiled the balance, so when they reached 16 (If I remember correctly), they were booted out.

As I recall Mormonism does not advocate having more children than you can afford to provide for. Apparently the FLDS do not have the same understanding. I believe in people being able to make their own decisions in such matters, but I do not believe I should be responsible for paying for their decisions through my taxes. This applies whether the parents are FLDS or the OctoMom. It is wrong for people to basically rob their neighbors to pay for their life choices.

And ā€œthrow away kidsā€ is just shameful.

I agree.

I have to make an additional comment. An Afro American Catholic deacon shared in a local university magazine the plight of the Afro American woman.

I myself grew up in the inner city.

He was sharing that up to the 1960’s, the majority of these children grew up in homes with a mother and a father. Then with the rise of feminism…that is anti-man and says women don’t need men coupled with the promotion of guilt free sex, young Afro American girls decided in their early teens that they wanted to have a baby. So they did.

Polygamy in reverse. Women initiating childbirth without concern for the man.

And so the deacon notes the fatherless families, the boys having ā€˜homies’ with their gangs…and the deplorable image they have of women, referring to them using profane names.

We could not afford middle and high school in the Catholic ā€˜valley’ school. I worked in a low income health office on the other side of town. The parochial school was head by a sister whose congregation was in the valley and said we could take my son there and have affordable tuition. He decided in the end not to go to the affluent high school near us, but go to the new Catholic high school for inner city kids. They had to work in a set up cooperation, hospital, social center, utilities office one day a week to help support their tuition. They had to wear a tie to school, do not wear any clothing to attract gangs. If they could not hold a job, they could not go to school there.

My son balked in time, thinking he could not stay there. The two first years were rough because he didn’t think the school was preparing him for college. One day he was mugged…for dilly dallying around instead of going straight to school. He wanted to quit. He had a year to go for graduation. The black boys came up to him to console him.

I asked the boys if they chose to live up there. They said no, they were born there. I asked them if they were afraid to go to school. They said yes. I asked if they went to school even if they were afraid. They said yes. So I turned to my son and asked if he could try to do the same as graduation year would be next year. He went back and pulled the highest gpa. Then in senior year, we had a parents meeting as the gangs were closing in and the kids were afraid. It was so sad. In the end, the graduation ceremony was incredibly fantastic.

Up on the platform, the 55 kids, majority black, were all in smiles. The class ended up having such a loyal spirit to one another. All the kids were pointed out. Practically every single one was going to a 4 year college. But I saw the faces of the boys who had consoled my son. He said they ended up not doing as well, were involved in premarital sex, and one was having a baby. But another Afro American boy came up to get his diploma – with his baby, and he was going on to college.

When people condone polygamy, it always appears to be something a person wants. There are families that are OK…but I think for most, polygamy is impoverishing, and Western countries at present are becoming more and more limited in supporting the consequences of such lifestyles. There is alot of abuse of the system.

Hi

I again had a look in the Scriptures of the Mormons (since I own them) and found the following things out:

In the Scriptures of the LDS Church it does nowhere say that Polygamy is allowed and should be practiced:

In the GS (Guide to the Scriptures) it says :

ā€œPlural marriage: The marriage of a husband to two or more living wives. It is lawful for a man to have only one wife, unless the Lord commands otherwise by revelation (Jacob 2: 27-30). By revelation, plural marriage was practiced in Old Testament times and in the early days of the restored Church by the direction of the prophet who held the priesthood keys (D&C 132: 34-40, 45). It is no longer practiced in the Church (D&C OD-1); today, having more than one wife is incompatible with membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.ā€

It also doesn’t say that in the Celestial Glory (the highest Heaven existing) you are allowed to have more than one wife (and by the way there is no word about virgins [like in Islam]) (D&C 76: 50-70).
Also confer the Guide to the Scriptures.

So I really think that why me is not an LDS Mormon but a Mormon from the FLDS Church (Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints).

Best wishes,
Esdra

I doubt that. Despite the convenient ā€œrevelationsā€ regarding polygyny and the priesthood ban for blacks when faced with financial repurcussions, I’ve met several LDS members who will argue in favor for it, to justify their past leaders’ actions.

It’s called cognitive dissonance.

The purpose of this thread was to show just how the lord supported polygamy in the old testament based on the first reading from last sunday June 13th. The lord gave david his master’s wives into his bosom. That was the point of the thread. So, the question: Does the lord condone polgyamy?
I read from another thread that, The Lord only allowed this temporarily, because mankind wasn’t ready to take the whole of The Divine Law.

Is this correct?

Does The Catechism Of The Catholic Church say anything?

Perhaps for some LDS. For why me, he’s made it clear over time that he supports a polygamous lifestyle, today.

As far as LDS theology goes, the FDLS have a leg to stand on. The 1890 Manifesto doesn’t read like any other of the LDS ā€œrevelationsā€, then there was the whole need for a 2nd Manifesto, not to mention, Taylor’s supsected 1886 ā€œrevelationā€.

From The Catechism of the Catholic Church:

2387 The predicament of a man who, desiring to convert to the Gospel, is obliged to repudiate one or more wives with whom he has shared years of conjugal life, is understandable. However polygamy is not in accord with the moral law." [Conjugal] communion is radically contradicted by polygamy; this, in fact, directly negates the plan of God which was revealed from the beginning, because it is contrary to the equal personal dignity of men and women who in matrimony give themselves with a love that is total and therefore unique and exclusive." The Christian who has previously lived in polygamy has a grave duty in justice to honor the obligations contracted in regard to his former wives and his children.

2400 Adultery, divorce, polygamy, and free union are grave offenses against the dignity of marriage.
