Just a thought. Have you ever heard of a woman interested in having multiple husbands ?When ever we hear about polygyny its all to do with men having multiple wives I ,ve never met the woman yet that would take on more than one man at a time.My thoughts are that polygyny is another way of men being the head honchos with women as property ,just a thought

God has never condoned polygamy. Sometimes He has not interfered with human practice. That’s not the same as “condoning”. Anyone who justifies their practice of polygamy based on God’s “permission” goes against God’s clearly stated opinion about marriage in the Gospels. There’s not even an argument about this. God has been VERY CLEAR.

**Does the Lord condone polygamy?
I sure hope not. One is plenty enough for one martyr.😉

To clarify for you.

God does not condone polygamy. END OF STORY.

Men, throughout time, have decided that they condoned polygamy for a variety of reasons.

The actions of men are not always indicative of the will of God. Polygamy is one example. God has been very clear about this in the Gospels. Marriage is between one man and one woman. Plural marriages have never been condoned by God.

Unfortunately, many mormons think that because God didn’t immediately destroy anyone who practiced polygamy that he must have condoned it.

If you use that line of thinking, then God would condone abortion. There is alot more abortion than there is polygamy.

Oh wait, mormons make allowances for abortion and polygamy. That won’t work, so let’s go a different route.

If you use the mormon line of thinking, then God condones murder. After all, murder has been around forever right?

It seems that these verse is a condoning of polygamy:

8 and I gave you your master’s house, and your master’s wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if this were too little, I would add to you as much more.

The lord not only gave david his master’s house but also his master’s wives were given into david’s bosom. It seems pretty clear that this is condoning polygamy. Now the mistake that was made was that david got a little greedy and killed a man for his wife. But god forgive him. But what about the man’s wife…did she forgive him?

Where does that say that God condoned polygamy? Where does it say that God approved it?

It doesn’t.

Rather, my original statement on the matter applies.

So the lord gives david his master’s wives and the lord does not approve of polygamy. Why did he give david his master’s wives for david’s bosom? And what was david’s bosom doing wiith these women?

You are not defending mormonism here. You are promoting polygamy.
In a way he is defending Mormonism (as always, though never Catholicism) by defending this loathsome practice of theirs. He knows it is a stumbling block (rightly so) to people considering Mormonism and so he justifies it.

Is God pleased when an “apostle” equates women with cattle and a marriage with a purchase?

Heber C Kimball said:
“I think no more of taking another wife than I do of buying a cow.”

I think He’s not pleased. And further I think it is this attitude and disrespect (equating a woman with an animal!!!) displayed by your “apostle” that show why the teachings on monogamy are in the NT.

By the way Why me people on MD are asking if you defend the Catholic Church with as much zeal as you do the LDS church. Apparently you have quite the reputation as a defender of Mormonism but you know I can’t find your defense of Catholicism anywhere could you give us an example?

just a short (name removed by moderator)ut about the LDS Church and the polygamy:

I nearly became a LDS so I pretty well know their teachings.

In the beginning polygamy was allowed by Joseph Smith, later, however, JS got a relevation (according to Doctrine and Covenants) that polygamy is sinful and not the will of the Lord.

Apparently why me is not a LDS but in a mormonic sect (“the fundamentalists” i think they are called) who still have polygamy because they don’t accept parts of D&C.

Why Me…are you a Catholic or are you a Mormon…my take on you is that you need us to justify your desire to be polygamous;I don’t know if you are already polygamous or wanting to.

I think the religions that came out of the Stone Campbell movement of the 1800’s were basically anti-Catholic, reduced and limited the significance of Jesus Christ so their Christology is limited…Without having faith in the fullness of Christ, they drew likewise drew back to the OT and its various practices for self-justification.

The religions of the Stone Campbell movement demonize and condemn the Catholic Church as part of their foundation because it is in their way. It also reveals great lack of charity because the fullness of Christ is lacking in their constructs. They love and venerate Him, but not to the fullness that is there for them in the Lord.

That’s part of it.

The other part is that when the revelation was received that polygamy was to be abandoned (long after Joseph Smith died) it was only “taken from the Earth”. Polygamy is still supposedly practiced in the Celestial Kingdom. Including, supposedly, by God/Heavenly Father. It’s all part of exaltation. So while Mormons will occasionally make reference to “Heavenly Mother” ~ God’s spouse ~ there are presumably many “Heavenly Mothers” and we are all their children, as is Jesus. So maybe the reference should be to “Heavenly Mothers” since there are supposed to be many of them.

It was “taken from the Earth” so that Utah could be admitted to the US as a state. That’s when the current Mormon “prophet” got the “revelation” that polygamy was no longer allowed.

Polygyny was considered a realistic alternative in the case of famine, widowhood, or female infertility like in the practice of levirate marriage, wherein a man was required to marry and support his deceased brother’s widow, as mandated by Deuteronomy 25:5–10.

Despite its prevalence in the Old Testament, scholars do not believe that polygyny was commonly practiced in the biblical era because it required a significant amount of wealth. Thus Solomon and David had many wives because of their great wealth.

Christians however never practiced polygyny.

In fact, the Muslims seem to be the real practioners of polygyny, with their harems.😉

Jesus Christ calls us to a different sort of culture than that found in the OT. One where we care for the hungry, the widows, and those who are suffering. You don’t have to marry a person, who may be in these circumstances, in order to care for them.

This is one of the fallacies of Mormon polygamy. The excuse that women needed to be cared for but there were less men. First of all, the census statistics show this is a folk tale. Second, any Christian should recognize immediately as a false teaching! Jesus didn’t say “marry widows, making polygamous relations”. He said, care for widows.

Polygamy in the OT was cultural, not a religious doctrine. This is where LDS get confused.

One thing I always found humorous about Polygamy being the “norm” in the Celestial Kingdom was the claim that there are 7 righteous women for every 1 righteous man so I guess there would HAVE to be polygamy. 😉 Or a lot of unattached females! 😃

As though God has gifted women with more grace. This seems to be something that is accepted by some in Catholicism as well. No, my dear brothers in Christ, God loves us all.

Wow that is STILL a Mormon belief?
I thought the LDS church officially outlawed polygamy?

Not to mention, how conveniently God changes his mind (through revelation, of course) regarding an “everlasting covenant” when faced with legal recourse.

They did. On the earth. It’s still the rule in the highest degree of the Celestial Kingdom.
To me, the Mormon concept of heaven seems similar to the Muslim heaven.

The main attraction in Muslim heaven is the unlimited sexual pleasures. The Hadith (official Muslim tradition) that says, “The lowliest of the inhabitants of paradise will be he who has eighty thousand servants, seventy-two wives…” The Koran speaks of virgin maidens who will be enjoyed by men with enhanced sexual stamina.

There is a parallel between Muslim concept of heaven and Mohammed’s life style. History is unclear but Mohammed had somewhere between 9 and 29 wives.

Maybe Joseph Smith was actually Muslim!
