Does the Lord condone polygamy?

Sure. My feelings while receiving the Eucharist are subjective, and not proof of my beliefs on the Eucharist.

Good enough?
So if a catholic equates receiving communion to a beautiful spiritual experience, I can say to that catholic that you can feel the same experience at falun gong? Or as a druggie? Interesting. 🙂

That’s one of the weapons of the LDS church - they will say the person insulting the church must be full of satan or simply jealous. They will say any truth that makes it look bad is false, all false.

That was also one of the ways Smith dealt with accusations. He would read the serious accusation in public. The simple fact that he read the accusations out loud was enough evidence to show is followers they must all be false. Would a guilty man actually read such accusations? Of course not! So they thought.
If you say so. I never said that you and the others are filled with satan. I have no idea what you are talking about here. But nice dodge. 🙂 The lord permited polygamy and sanctioned it. He did not condemn it. End of story.

If they use that feeling as a way of justifying their beliefs, I would say yes.

I view subjective evidence the same, regardless of what position I hold.

NOW, for the question that’s been asked FOUR TIMES:

What OT prophets did God “command” into polygyny??

You were the originator of this thread, and you framed it around the idea that since polygyny was allowed to a few OT prophets, the idea of God “reinstating” it to JS was acceptable.

Since I’ve shown that the two have the signifigant difference of being “tolerated” in OT cases, and “commanded” in JS’ case (as you have pointed out), I would say your original analogy falls pretty flat on its face, wouldn’t you?

Besides Smith’s claims, where did he COMMAND it?
What is the title of this thread? Did the lord condone polygamy? The answer is yes. 🙂

The women who JS was sealed to had beautiful spiritual experiences some even claiming receiving heavenly visions. Thus, they consented. Very powerful.

No, the Lord did not. But even if He did, what happened 6000 years ago in a way different culture has nothing to do with Joe’s Scams. Joe was a false prophet. End of Story.

Well, the lord of the OT did not make it so clear since he awarded David many wives to have close to his bosom.

I’m sending you on a mission to England! As soon as you leave I’m going to marry your wife!

Seems Smith was doing that a lot. Send someone off on a mission and as soon as he left he would get hitched to his wife. lol. Wow. The nerve of that guy.

The “power” of their experience is immaterial. I thought we could agree on that.

Actually, the title of this thread is “DOES the Lord condone polygamy”. Present tense, yet you focus on what he DID (past tense) condone in the OT.

Then you draw a false analogy between what WAS (past tense, again) ALLOWED, and what Smith claimed was COMMANDED.

whyme:
…So, it seems that the mormons could have instruction from god to practice polygamy. It certainly would not be impossible…

The point was: it was practiced in the old testament and the lord did not have a problem. …
(past tense, again)

You have failed to prove that God DOES NOW approve of polygyny (which Christ preached AGAINST),

…and your continued false analogy of "Well, if God ALLOWED it then, it is certainly possible he COMMANDED it to Smith only proves the vacuity of your argument.

17 pages of nothing that I could have summed up in two letters: N O

“The Lord does not condone polygyny (today)”.

Case closed.

Now, for the $60,000 question that you haven’t answered, despite my asking twice, and zaffiborant asking on this very page:

What OT prophets did God “command” into polygyny?
In the Mormon scriptures, Joseph Smith re-invented the story of Abraham such that their god commanded Abraham to take Hagar as a plural wife:
34 God commanded Abraham, and Sarah gave Hagar to Abraham to wife. And why did she do it? Because this was the law; and from Hagar sprang many people. This, therefore, was fulfilling, among other things, the promises.

65 Therefore, it shall be lawful in me, if she receive not this law, for him to receive all things whatsoever I, the Lord his God, will give unto him, because she did not believe and administer unto him according to my word; and she then becomes the transgressor; and he is exempt from the law of Sarah, who administered unto Abraham according to the law when I commanded Abraham to take Hagar to wife.
  • D&C 132: 34,65
Paul

I am still stuck, in a mild shock, on the phrase ‘reluctant polygamist’ in reference to J.Smith. Reluctant in bedding the teen girls? In the Catholic church we have consecrated men and women who give up marriage, family & more for the glory of God but in the Mormon church men took/take in many wives/bed partners for the glory of God?
Reality isn’t reality any more. Instead, perception has replaced reality and that’s what’s it’s all about now: people trying to portray Smith as something he wasn’t. Even so, modern polygamists use this same approach to downplay the lust involved in a plurality of wives. In Smith’s day, as now, it’s simple BS.

Yet, since we know that Smith was a liar, a fraud, and a false prophet, anything those women did was under false pretenses and thus incorrect in the eyes of God.

If you still believe that Smith was a prophet of God, you haven’t been paying attention.

Was that in the JS translation in Genesis 16? Too?

Do you know the date D&C 132 was added? I think I remember hearing D&C 101 was originally against polygyny, but was later removed.

It seems like the times were always a changin’.

Funny, but not even the LDS version of the OT lists it that way:

scriptures.lds.org/en/gen/16

Whyme has been taken to the woodshed on this one, with extreme predjudice!
Yes, the Mormon scriptures radically contradict one another because they were written at different times along Joseph Smith’s journies from Protestant monotheist to Mormon polytheist and from traditional monogamist to filandering polygynist.

Such were the experiences of the so called victims of Joseph’s polygamy. 🙂 These women experienced powerful manifestations that polygamy was called by god.
By that same token, I think we’ll all agree that Scientology is wrong, correct? Why, then, doesn’t Tom Cruise see himself as a victim, being duped by L. Ron Hubbard?

When I look at this church and follow the dots I come up with a church who’s goal is eternal mating. But I’ve wondered if that’s just me and with a distorted view point. But I have to trust the evidence and my senses -
  1. They pushed the idea of God having sex with Mary.
  2. Started polygamy just to satisfy Smiths lust.
  3. Temple ceremony with phallic worship.
  4. Believe in next life polygamy.
  5. Eternal baby making.
This just doesn’t seem Christian to me. When I was going to the LDS church I started to think they were a Christian church but I’ve decided it’s not Christian at all. The basics of the church are not Christian.

Seems more like a church to satisfy Smith’s lust. Even Brodie says this. Smith took power, sex, family, learning, and expanded it to the next life and enlarged it all. Continuous learning, a star for each to be the king of, more than one wife, sex (apparently lots of it). I wonder what Smith would have dreamed up if he had lived five more years.

I have? Where have I been taken to the woodshed. First, I proved that the lord of the OT condoned of polygamy and in fact, encouraged it through rewarding of wives. Second, I have proven that the women who were sealed to JS who were reluctant about the practice, prayed about it, received heavenly visitations of its truthfulness and only then, agreed to be sealed to Joseph Smith.

Those are the facts. The women received powerful witnesses of the truthfulness of polygamy at that time A witness that they could not deny.

In return, I received innuendos, mocking, comparisons, etc. But no facts to refute my claim that the lord condoned polygamy and no refutation of the women who received powerful witnesses.
