Does the Lord condone polygamy?

Polygamy should be rejected mostly because it’s torture. Why would any sane man want double or triple the hormones, estrogen attacks, double or triple the drama, and all that bickering. Isn’t one enough!? 😛 I always felt sorry for King David. That had to be rough being in that drama-laden castle! David must’ve heard “do these jeans make me look fat?” twenty times a day!

There’s a restaurant near my home with a sign lettered on the door that says “No cigars, cigarettes or crybabies.”

REAL babies ~ I have no problem with ~ crying or not.

Adult crybabies drive me CRAZY! :whacky: 😃
 
Considering the beer companies are running commercials featuring the founding fathers of the country, I’m surprised a drug company doesn’t do one with Mary Lincoln - Mary Lincoln on Prozac or Lexapro. 🙂

You’re aware that the JOD considers itself scripture, right?
 
The JoD is valuable as a historical document in that it shows clearly what the LDS church believed and taught in former times. It is to the LDS much like the Early Church Fathers are to Catholics.

The difference is that while the ECFs demonstrate that Catholic teaching has been wonderfully consistent for 2000 years, the JoD demonstrates how vastly different LDS beliefs and teachings are now compared to a mere 150 years ago.

Some might characterize it as apostasy. 😉

And we must remember that Mormons claim that the inspired words of the living prophets are also scripture, and that such words can be found in General Conference(s). Some of the contents of the JoD come from General Conferences. I’m not aware of a Mormon teaching that the inspired words of living prophets become uninspired when they are no longer living, so we should be able to use the JoD to see what these “inspired words” from General Conferences were.

Unless a Mormon would like to cite an official document that qualifies which talks at General Conferences are inspired…

And that’s the reason that they have to distance themselves as far from it as possible by calling it merely Brigham Young’s ‘opinion,’ even though the prophet cannot possibly lead the church astray (which seemed to happen on a regular basis). It wasn’t until the 1970s that the church started to see some cohesion in their teachings, evolving though they were even then.

Just a wild guess here, but could it be the sex with Mary thing?

Keep in mind that this “Bryan” may not know the truth, may know the truth and be covering it up for the sake of appearances, or may not believe that this is the truth. I think you have to give him reasonable doubt on this one.
 
The younger LDS I have spoken with over the last 10 years or so really don’t know about this doctrine. They have never heard of it, apparently. When I was LDS it was taught openly and proudly and often.
 
I’ve been emailing an LDS woman because she’s interested in me although she’s too old for me. Anyway, I told her I’m considering leaving the church. I told her that one of the reasons I’m leaving is because the LDS people believe God had s*x with Mary. Here is what she said:
  • I don’t listen to all of that **** so no, I have never heard that. I know in my heart what is true? So all of that nonsense and skepticism seem to not bother me. I listen to the prophet now, and don’t dwell on possible mistakes that might have been made early in the Church years. Ugh. I told her the early leaders pushed the idea that God had s*x with Mary. Nonsense? Skepticism?

I just talked to a someone who left the Catholic church for the LDS church but has drifted away from the LDS church. Anyway, I told her one reason I’m leaving is because the church is not truthful at the beginning, they keep things from people and let them find out later. I told her they pushed polygamy off to the next life. She said that was wrong - Joseph Smith tried to end polygamy and they killed him for it! Uh, I told her I never heard that story before. She rambled on about Smith saying it was ok to marry the windowed women but no one else. She said other men wanted to marry more women, so they killed Smith. I don’t know where she got her story but it’s wrong. lol. Jeesh. She said she was half Cherokee, half Hispanic. She seemed at least 50% cooky.
