Does the Pope need a stable group at St. Peter's or St. John Lateran?

I was thinking about when or if the Pope might celebrate a public Mass according to the EF. Then it occurred to me, that according to his own law, it requires a stable group at the parish. In terms of St. John Lateran or St. Peter’s, who would make up that potential stable group? Do you think there is interest there?

I thought any priest can now say the Traditional Latin Mass anytime without permission from his bishop, privately, publicly, or whatever. Are we going to start nitpicking with “stable” groups now?

Any priest of the Roman Rite can add a Mass in the extraordinary form at his discretion. The “group which exists stably” language refers to instances where a pastor must accomodate a request from the people. But a priest does not have to wait for a request from the people to offer the EF Mass, he can just decide to celebrate it.

Exactly. Even if he couldn’t just “add” a (public) Mass, can’t the Pope just say a “private” Mass…to which everyone is invited! 😉

I would think so. I would also think he could do whatever he wanted to because as the Bishop of Rome he could in the past give an indult:p.

Not only that but are either of the Churches mentioned Parishes?

Just thinking out loud:D.

He’s the Pope. I would think that he could say an EF Mass anywhere he wants to.

The publicly televised broadcast of the EF from EWTN is not “for a stable group of people who request it”, it is for the good of the Church and the furthering of EF use I believe.

As far as the MP goes a priest or bishop does not need a “stable group of people” who desire the EF to be used for a “private” celebration in which people are welcome to attend or is even broadcast to the public.

I remember reading a while back that the Pope does indeed plan on celebrating the EF- a Solemn Pontifical Mass in the future most likely not in St. Peters though…I have to go back and read the article.

Please let us know if you find out when the Holy Father is going to say an EF Mass. Hopefully, EWTN will televise it.

There is nothing “set in stone” as of yet, but according to the rumor mills, the Holy Father will celebrate one on the first Sunday of Advent at St. John Lateran. I’m pretty sure it will be televised by someone, as it will be a HUGE event.

The problem is with the Translation

from what i understand from reading Fr. Z’s blog the term “Stable” group comes from a bad transalation that people who oppose the MP use to try to counter act it.

Very true, not only does the Pope not need a stable group, your local Priest doesn’t need one either.

By the way, not only does the pope have the authority to say an Extraordinary Form Mass anytime he wants, he is permitted to use ANY of the rites of either branch of the church. Pope John Paul II celebrated the Divine Liturgy on at least a couple of occasions, and I believe even celebrated the Mozarabic Rite once in Spain.

Thanks for the clarifications and additional info. I trust any planned papal Masses of this kind will be publicized on this forum in advance 😃
