Does the term "Roman Catholic" apply to Eastern Catholics as well?

We have a local church called Byzantine Catholic.
if this is in the US, and if this is the Byzantine Catholic Church also known as Ruthenian Greek Catholic Church, they should be under a diocese (eparchy). The Byzantine Catholic church has 4 eparchies based in the US- Archeparchy of Pittsburgh, Eparchy of Parma, Eparchy of Passaic, and Eparchy of Phoenix.
they are under the Pope
Nope, they are in full communion with the Holy See. They are not under anything.

Byzantines are Eastern Catholic, and as a Roman Catholic, I’m not in a good position to answer questions about them. I think Alexandria’s answer is basically correct. If not, there are lots of other ECs regularly on the forum who can add more.

Thanks, Thomas. I had not heard of the eparchies. I’ll do some reading.

We have a local church called Byzantine Catholic. They are not Orthodox and they are under the Pope.
There are a few byzantine Catholic Churches, but every last parish has a bishop.

Some, as mentioned, have their own eparchies. some are part of RC dioceses (I believe the Greco-Italian parish in NYC is such. The other of that rite in the US is part of my Eparchy [nee Ruthenian, Phoenix])

“under” the Pope is usually the wrong term; “in communion with” is more accurate for most. But there are also a couple of churches without bishops for which the term would be accurate.

I always thought it was Roman Catholic and Byzantinian Catholic.

Although, anecdotaly, when I visited in Ethiopia, folks there are Oriental Orthodox or Muslim mostly, they refer to crucifixes as “Latin Crosses” and Roman Catholic Church as the Latin Church.

Tangent: while in Ethiopia, my Episcopalian partner and I were called “Pentay” since Ethiopian experience with Protestantism is pretty much only the Pentecostal or Prosperity Gospel sort of stuff.

the faction of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church that became in full communion with Rome is the Ethiopian Catholic Church (Alexandrian Rite) - they are Eastern Catholics as well. The Alexandrian Rite also includes the Coptic Catholic Church and the Eritrean Catholic Church. Of course all 3 churches have counterparts in the Oriental Orthodox group.

The Byzantine (Greek) Rite is one of the Eastern rites. The others are Alexandrian, Armenian, West Syriac and East Syriac.

Byzantine Catholic counterpart is Eastern Orthodox Church. likewise for Alexandrian, Armenian and West Syriac the counterpart is the Oriental Orthodox churches.
And for the East Syriac it is the Assyrian Church of the East (descended from the historic Church of the East).
