Does the travellers' dispensation apply to me in this case?

My wife and I will be travelling home to my father’s place this Saturday, a journey of about 6 hours. I already booked the tickets before I remembered that in my dad’s home village there is only a vigil Mass on Saturday, as the priest also takes care of 2 other towns.

I know there is a dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass if you have to travel on Sunday. Does this also apply to us if we have to travel on Saturday and will leave before the 1st Vigil (4pm) and arrive after the only Mass in town? Seems logical that it would, but I know the dispensation is a matter of the Church’s command, not of Natural Law, so logic may have nothing to do with it.

If you’re unable to make Sunday Mass because there is no Mass available to you, then there’s no sin in missing. But if the priest in your dad’s parish is able to travel to two other parishes on Sundays, it seems likely that these neighboring towns can’t be too far away, in which case you’d be obliged to make every reasonable effort to attend a Mass at a Church other than your dad’s. You can use masstimes.org to look for Masses, or simply call your dad’s parish and ask about nearby Catholic Churches.

I think you have to talk to your priest to actually receive a dispensation beforehand anyway, so talking to your priest before your trip is sound advice.

You should be able to make Sunday Mass if the traveling priest can. But, seek the counsel of your own priest and tell him details so he can guide you.

there is no such automatic dispensation just because you are travelling. If you genuinely cannot get to Mass for any good reason you have no obligation. If there is no way you can work it out, then there is no obligation. Yes you can ask your own priest for a dispensation if you wish. Or do some more research into the local situation where you will be visiting.
