Does the vigil Mass fulfill Sunday Mass obligation?

Is attending Mass on days other than Sunday invalid? If so, why is Mass held on days other than Sunday? Im having a hard time understanding this because my wife works on Sunday so we attend Mass on Saturday. Is it wrong for me to attend Saturday instead of Sunday?
