Does this constitute drunkeness?

Suppose a 200 pound man has 4 to 6 beers after work 3 week-nights per week. Suppose the man keeps up with all his family duties and the drinking does not at all affect his employment. Suppose the man is always at home while drinking (as opposed to driving or at the bar). Does this constitute drunkeness which Jesus and/or Paul warn against?

Doesn’t sound like it. I suppose it depends upon whether it impairs your moral thinking and behavior, such as mistreating your wife, children, avoiding duties to family.

So, to me it isn’t the number of drinks, but whether you cross the line into bad behavior. Some people can handle more drinks without adverse effect than others.

People usually ask these questions when family members are complaining about their drinking. It is not how much one drinks, but the consequences of drinking. If the drinking is causing discord, then yes, it’s a problem.

Quite true.

Interesting, you have a very good point.

This is just a shot in the dark, but you wouldn’t happen to weigh around, let’s say, 200 lbs?

I really have no idea. I think it depends on how the alcohol affects this person. Different amounts of alcohol affect different people in different ways. So if this person’s well-formed conscience tells them that they committed a sin of drunkenness then they probably did. Of course, even a person with a well-formed conscience can be wrong about that so it would be best to mention that sin in their next Confession and ask the priest about it. A priest can usually tell whether or not one committed a mortal sin, especially if they know you well.
