Does this count as a mortal sin?

About a few weeks ago, me and my friends went to a mall in a car. But we had 6 people there, and we ended up having an overload. I know that we shouldn’t be overloading, but then I thought the nanny (my friend’s dad owns the car and her nanny follows us) won’t let us walk to the mall anyway. And so I still sat in the car and overloaded it. But during that time, I didn’t really consider that this could be a sin or fully acknowledge the fact that it is illegal. I thought if any police shows up, we would just let them punish us. It wasn’t until yesterday (after a tv show which had a conversion that overloading is illegal, a few days before) when the thought that this might be a mortal sin hit me. Oh man, what should I do?

You profile does not state any religion. What are you?

For ANY sin to be mortal 3 conditions must be fulfilled:
  1. Sin must be of grave matter
  2. (Full Knowledge) A person must know the sin is of grave matter
  3. (Full Consent of the Will) A person knowing the sin is of grave matter goes ahead and commits it anyway

sorry I haven’t edited that part in my profile. I am a Catholic.

I wouldn’t classify this action as any sin. Why would you think this was a sinful act? Did anyone get hurt? Could Our Lord have been offended in any manner? No, I don’t think so. A lapse of judgement maybe, owing to the “nanny” state of mind our government is presently in, but a sinful act? I don’t think this rises to that level.

No, nobody got hurt. But didn’t God said imply that we should also obey authorities in the ten commandments “obey your father and mother”?

It would only be grave matter if your overloading was so irresponsible that it became a consciously reckless act that put lives at grave risk of having a serious accident that could maim or kill someone.

Thanks guys, I guess I am really paranoid. Sorry for not writing in this thread so long.

Going to the mall is a sin, regardless of how you get there.

Just kidding 🙂 I think you’re probably ok, but it’s inspiring to see someone really evaluating all of their actions to try to make sure they are aware of their sins and trying to avoid them in the future.

God Bless!

at the time, did you know or think this was grave matter, did you fully consent with full free will with the intention “oh I know this is a mortal sin and if I die unreconciled with God I may go to hell, but I want to go to the mall so I will knowingly commit this mortal sin.”
No? then you have not committed a sin.
do nothing except exercise more common sense next time.

I don’t think I fully realise that it can be a mortal sin until like a week later. I didn’t think as far as going to hell either, as far as I can remember. I thought it was ok at the time but I still had some doubts…

Your question was correctly answered by the first responder (thistle). This absolutely cold not be a mortal sin (based on your account - only God knows for sure).

Relax, it’s OK. Go to Confession and mention this also, and you are are 100% OK.

Mentioned it in Confession today. Felt a bit weird though because some sins came out differently than I had rehearsed in my head… but I guess they meant the same thing. Anyway, I am starting to get worried about something else. Today I talked something about reading my friend’s paper because my mom teaches him with another guy. And then I walked away, I heard that the guy was talking something like “don’t make (my name) your enemy”. Then this girl asked me something in my language that in that situation can be interpreted as:
“what is he talking about?” “What are you looking at?”. At first I thought she meant 'what are you looking at?" and I instinctively said “nothing”. I also thought she was asking about something totally serious, like me and some friends had a major fell out or something. I know that the guy I talked to was talking about the paper (or at least I assumed so) but I don’t think that’s what the girl was asking about.

You are mistaken.
Why would you think this was a sinful act?
What he did was wrong, and he had an idea that it was wrong, and he did anyway.
Did anyone get hurt?
Getting hurt is not the criteria for having sinned. If we were talking about him being intoxicated and driving and no one got hurt, do you think that means it’s not a sin to drink and drive? Overloading represents a danger, and as such puts peoples life and health in danger. Exposing self and others to unnecessary danger is a sin.
Could Our Lord have been offended in any manner? No, I don’t think so.
Absolutely - its an abuse of our freedom and contrary to his command to love one another.
A lapse of judgement maybe, owing to the “nanny” state of mind our government is presently in, but a sinful act? I don’t think this rises to that level.
I would probably agree that it is not a mortal sin, but “all wrongdoing is sin”(1John 5:17) and he clearly chose to do something he knew was wrong.

Blessings!
