Does this matter?

Hey guys,
I was in confession today and confessed tossing around a heretical idea to my friends. We were kind of time-strapped, so I didn’t mention that it was over Facebook, even when Fr. obviously thought that it was spoken. Does it matter? Does it invalidate my confession?
Thanks!

It is my understanding you are not to discuss personal confessions except with a priest.

The penitent is not bound by the seal of the confessional. It would, however be unwise to discuss what the priest might have said (not applicable here, I know) as he would have no chance to defend himself, as he IS bound.

That’s another thing I was told… I just didn’t want to bring this up in my next confession if I didn’t have to… So what say ye?

I think a face-to-face conversation has the potential to be something entirely different than a face book exchange. The key is whether or not the stuff of face book can be viewed by others even now (since I’m not a user I haven’t a clue to how it works).

A face-to-face conversation once over is done - others can’t be affected, but if the face book stuff lingers can others read it and continue to be affected? I think that would make the difference. So I’d bring it up again, and not only clarify that it was on face book but perhaps clarify if anyone else can still see the exchange.

Would that have invalidated the confession, do you think? I plan on asking Fr. anyway, I’m just not patient enough to wait until Wednesday… :o

Since the omission was not done deliberately to hide a sin I would say no but I’m not a priest so my opinion isn’t worth that much! 😃

Oh yeah? Well, I’m 16 so 😛 my opinion counts for less (starts chanting it childishly) 🙂

Thanks!

Well, since you don’t know quite everything yet ;), here are two suggestions for you.

Start telling the whole truth in confession all the time.

Get some balance in your life. Sixteen year olds don’t “toss around heretical ideas” with their friends. You need more interests.

I was fifteen at the time, and still trying to find the way.

Actually I think teens SHOULD question the faith - because the nice thing about teaching the truth is that it can take questions - all kinds, any kind - as long as you are really looking for answers. The key is to make sure you use good sources to find TRUE answers to your questions.

This site makes a great place to start. There are lots of other places to go. The Catechism is awesome - but I think teens are not into reading much (maybe the online version?).

Anyway - keep asking questions, getting the truth, and then SHARE IT! Let other teens know about all the cool stuff God the Father and Jesus and the Holy Spirit have done and are doing. What we have as Catholics is mind bogglingly wonderful! :extrahappy:

Speaking of sinning on Facebook, the priest at my parish actually discussed this, which I think you should know. Even if you confess your heretical siinings on Facebook, as long as they’re still posted, you’re still sinning. You have to either go back and delete them, or if that’s not possible, correct what you said.

The official response from my confessor was that no, it did not make the confession invalid, but I should be more cautious next time (that’s seriously all he said… I’m not even sure if he was referring to care for what I post on Facebook or care to confess everything fully).
