A friend was talking to me about their confession and i accidently (at least i think, i am unsure) revealed some contents to another friend. i was anxious as to wether or not i should say what i said but said it anyways:(

i am a rather scrupulous person and this whole situation is makeing me very uneasy

A priest is bound by the seal of confession.

The penitent and others they reveal details to are not.

You are not excommunicated.

It is the priest who is bound by the seal of Confession not you.

“Let the priest who dares to make known the sins of his penitent be deposed”, and he goes on to say that the violator of this law should be made a life-long, ignominious wanderer. Canon 21 of the Fourth Lateran Council (1215), binding on the whole Church, lays down the obligation of secrecy in the following words: “Let the priest absolutely beware that he does not by word or sign or by any manner whatever in any way betray the sinner: but if he should happen to need wiser counsel let him cautiously seek the same without any mention of person. For whoever shall dare to reveal a sin disclosed to him in the tribunal of penance we decree that he shall be not only deposed from the priestly office but that he shall also be sent into the confinement of a monastery to do perpetual penance”

If gossip was a sin there would be no popes. Just confess, fix any wrong-doing with an honest & contrite heart & promise your heart you’ll never do it again. Don’t let this trip you up. Jesus loves you.

You are not excommunicated, just pray & be thankful that you learned something that will enrich your heart and your kindnesses.

God Bless.

Just to add to this, in addition to the Priest, anyone who overhears the confession of another (e.g. a translator or the next person in line outside the “box” if Father has a rather lound voice) is also bound by the seal.

Since you did not overhear the original confession, as 1ke said, the seal does not apply.

As others have said, you are not excommunicated. However…
There may be a sin here in telling the other person if you were breaking a confidence in so doing. Such confidence might have been explicit or implicit between you and the one who told you. In fact I would say that you saying above that you were anxious about saying anything indicates that there was an implied sense that you should not be spreading this around.
So, say an Act of Contrition, and get to confession but don’t feel you are cut off.

This doesn’t make sense. Gossip is a sin. Calumny if it is false informtion and Detraction if it is true.

And there are still popes.

???
Just let this kind & gentle child of God know that we screw up & it’s not the end of the world. What is in our heart doesn’t often 'make sense," it should enrich us & draw us closer to God through the love & humanity of Christ.

The excommunication applies only to priests for breaking the seal of confession.

Don’t worry - I know I’ve done this at least once. It’s not a good thing to do, but sometimes we all slip up without thinking about it.

Rest easy 🙂

Fine, but it doesn’t do anyone a service by telling her that something which is a sin is not. Even kind and gentle children of God need to acknowledge their sins to avoid doing them in the future, leading to a habbit that makes them a little less kind and a little less gentle and eventually no longer a child of God.

Everyone gossips, its OK if its not malicious. we all talk & pass judgment on others, not saying its a good thing, But thats the way it is, juicy gossip spreads fast

You are talking about a “latae sententiae” excommunication. I don’t know, but I doubt it.

It is the priest that is bound by the seal of the sacrament, not you. The only other cases where a third party is bound by the seal would be if they were asked to translate the confession by the penitent or if someone accidentally overheard the confession (e.g. someone walking by the confessional as the penitent is recounting his sins, or another penitent in the other booth waiting for their turn overhears it, or bedside medical personnel, etc.).

Now, if the penitent himself revealed the details of their confession after the fact, then that’s just fine. Also, if the priest decides to use a very vague description of the confession while teaching people about confession, then that’s fine too as long as the identity of the penitent is not revealed and specific details that might reveal their identity be left out. Usually, the priest does not know the penitent’s identity anyway and the sins described are common.

Now with that said, I do not think it was okay for you to gossip about another person’s private sins like that. Although it would not merit excommunication, it is still a sin. If it merely slipped or was unintentional then that would be venial sin, if it was done with full knowledge and deliberate consent with malicious intent then it would be mortal sin.

No, it is on “OK” to commit sins. If it is malicious gossip,as has been stated, then it is the sin of calumny. But, gossip is not becoming a Christian either. We should spend that time praying for the person, instead of “juicy gossip”. We should ask the person we are tempted to gossip with to pray with us also. If we can’t do that, we should excuse ourselves, and say “I don’t think I should be having this discussion” then go to a private place to pray.

Rom 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

2Co 12:20 For I fear that perhaps when I come I may find you not as I wish, and that you may find me not as you wish–that perhaps there may be quarreling, jealousy, anger, hostility, slander, gossip, conceit, and disorder.

Look at what gossip is next to in this passage? Who wants to go there?
