Does this prayer work?

If you say, Lord, I am sorry for my sins now and all the ones that I will have in the future, will he understand that?
 
Do YOU understand that commitment?
How do you believe prayer “works”?
 
I’m sure he’ll understand, but it doesn’t give you dispensation from the sacrament of penance.

You cannot ask for forgiveness for sins you have not yet committed. That is like asking a Court of Law to find you not guilty of a crime you had not yet committed.
 
It may be a little presumptuous, meaning you’re assuming God will automatically forgive you.

I understand what you mean and that you’re asking for forgiveness but it’s not a blank slate to sin.

It can’t hurt to say the prayer; however, it’s not a substitute for confession, penance, and sacrifice.
 
God will understand–meaning He “gets” where you’re coming from and what is in your heart when you pray it. However, we have an ongoing responsibility to avoid sin and to repent when we do sin. In other words, this prayer won’t eliminate the need for confession.
 
Most of my protestant friends believe in assured salvation, which is a frustrating topic to talk about.:roll_eyes:

IMO, most Catholics and protestants are guilty of presuming on God’s mercy and taking advantage of His infinite mercy.

If we confess our sins, yet make no reasonable acommendations to amend our sinful ways (i.e. paying lip service in confessing our sins) why would God forgive us? He’s not an idiot.

If I punch you and ask for forgiveness yet continue to hit you and ask for forgiveness, what reasonable person would forgive me?
