Several friends of mine believe that paying tuition to a Catholic school (elementary, high school, college/university) helps fulfill the 10% tithe that we are called to make. Is this belief correct?
No. Catholics do not have to tithe at all. Tithing was an Old Testament obligation. Catholics are called to support the Church to the best of their ability. While payment for a child’s education does not directly support the Church, it can factor in to a family’s decision for how much money and other resources (e.g., time, talent) are available after tuition has been paid to give to the support of the Church.
