I just need to know if other people feel this way. I like to buy movies at the second had store because frankly, I find the price of movies to be ridiculous. The last 2 movies I rented had some violence in them and also some kind of emotional bullying. I find myself feeling so bad for the victim in the movies and it brings up all those childhood memories of being bullied.

Just curious, but does anyone else find it is best to not watch certain movies because it simply upsets them for a few days?

Angie

Most definitely. The other day, I heard a comedian make a joke about abortion and found myself angry and felt the need to pray to calm down. I wasn’t even watching the show, just happened to be flipping channels and caught the tail end of a comedy bit. Left me in a funk for a few hours. 😦

I think it also though it depends on my current state of mind. I like horror movies, but when we move (we are military), I am less likely to watch the ones that have some kind of weird “the new house is haunted” plot. LOL When my spouse is deployed, the news depresses me to no end, so I avoid it as much as possible.

The same applies to my kids. If my kids are already bouncing off the walls, I don’t think that’s the time for them to watch shows that may get them more worked up (like sports or some kids dance/music show).

FWIW, music does the same thing…I listen to certain types depending on my mood at the time.

TV ? Don’t know, cut the cord off the thing in 2005 and have never looked back. Way more time now for important things, like prayer , family time, or a good book. When i am in the presence of a TV now i have to say i find most all of it quite repulsive.

Movies ? We might see one every other year or so, most are garbage, but there are a few good ones now and then. I try to watch the Passion of Christ ( M Gibson) every Lent.
Regarding the ‘garbage’ parts in many movies, i am reminded of this comment,
"You wouldn’t eat doggie do-do would you ? Would you eat a cake with ‘just a little’ of it baked in ? Then why would you watch a movie with ‘just a little’ garbage in it ? "

I watch comedies exclusively. It does effect my mood. However, choosing only comedies means that tv improves my mood ;).

If I watch a horror movie I HAVE to watch a Disney movie afterwards. Other than that, nope. I don’t usually obsess over what is said on TV.

I could not sleep when Bambi’s mother died. Of course if you have any imagination, films can affect your mood. You would have to consider counselling if they didn’t. Righteous anger at a sick joke on abortion should make you a bit chuffed about yourself, that your conscience is on the right track. To immune or isolate yourself from the world, no matter the sad state it is in, is not an answer. React as Christ’s warrior and don’t let the world get on top of you.

Good for you for just unplugging the thing. Very good analogy about the pooh! I know that television not only affects moods, but it also affects attitudes and actions of those who watch it. Our children and young people do spend a lot of time watching TV, and a lot of parents are not watching what their kids are watching. Kids and tweens are constantly being subjected to violence, sex, and other immoral and sinful things, that they are starting to think it is just normal human behavior. Some shows actually tell kids how to do the horrible things they are showing. Even commercials are becoming more sexual and violent.

Please grab a good book and read. It gives much more to the imagination, and when you are finished with it, you can pass it along to another bored person.

A mom who did watch what the kids were seeing and listening to.

I would say that certain things on TV can rile up negative emotions in me, but I usually don’t watch those things because of that.

In general, though, watching TV seems to make me kind of tired.

Sure. Movies today are very realistic and graphic. I watched the series “The Bible” on TV last Easter and cried all through it! And everyone knows the ending on that one! 👍

A year ago or so I threw my television out of my place as I didn’t need it often anyways. So enough time has passed now to make a judgement and I must say I haven’t missed out on anything.

If anything mayor happens I hear it on the radio in the morning, or I can go to CAF world news

Oh and in regards to football, a have a friend who has a sling box so I can watch the games on Sundays.

Yes indeed… It mostly deepens perhaps on you own personality as to how T.V
Affects your mood… I find movies at the cinema have more effect on myself than anything on T.V, maybe because of the big screen

I do enjoy watching some of the '50s and '60s shows that were on TV when I was a kid. Those shows usually had a moral to the story, and no sex or graphic violence. They were wholesome and sometimes comical.

I really like “Ed Sullivan,” “Andy Griffith,” and “Mayberry,” and now AT&T even has “My Three Sons.”

My kids don’t like them because, oh my goodness, they are in black & white…

:rotfl:

That’s why I watch EWTN mostly or listen to our Catholic Radio station. God Bless Memaw

I love reruns of Frasier–but have now seen them all 3 or 4 times each! I also like MASH and Cheers too–but my kids don’t care for any of them. Thank heavens for multiple TV’s!! :thumbsup:LOL!

Yeah. Horror movies give me nightmares, and visual portrayals of rape or sexual assault make me depressed for a while, even if it’s not graphic and even if the story handles it responsibly (which is rare). I try to avoid both as much as possible.

I do become moved by other stories, too, but I think that’s OK as long as it doesn’t interrupt our ability to function. Stories are often about emotional subject matter, and it’s only natural that watching them would cause us to feel good or bad.

I do feel the same way about certain shows. Unfortunately, most times I’m unaware that something upset me until after I see it since most of what I watch is on TV.

I did see an episode of a crime show once that brought back some memories of bullying. Found it very hard to sleep that night because I understood how the victim felt, and how bystanders who out of fear didn’t get involved felt. Sometimes these things can really get those Old Emotions stirred up again. 😦

All my nieces and nephews–and even my kids told me that since I like crime dramas I’d love “Dexter”. Holy cow! Have you ever watched “Dexter”? I was awake for 2 nights!!!

Sometimes we get the old Black and white I Love Lucy shows ,
That is what I call real comedy… Not a hint of sex or drugs… Best humour ever…

Same situation with me, except my brother is the the one who keeps telling me about it. I’ve never see it, and I don’t plan too. 🙂

One day, if I ever get the chance to I want to create something with real humor and not this cheap immature garbage that passes as comedy these days.

Well, I can dream. 🙂
