Does women way of dressing affect the possibility of sexual assault?

Thats total garbage!
First of all, calm down. If you have a problem with the Centers for Disease Control study, take it up with them. Don’t kill the messenger.

there are plenty of wives who can arouse their husbands to the point of no return, but when their wives say no, husbands stop! at least mine does! you cant justify intense sexual arousal with rape…it doesnt work like that!
Again, you seem to be equating “affect the possibility” with “justify the possibility” even though many in this thread have pointed out that nobody is arguing that any woman deserves to be sexually assaulted. The study said that some men get so aroused that they won’t stop even if the woman says stop. That says that sexual arousal is a component of rape, at least in some situations. Don’t get mad at me. Get mad at those men. Or get mad at Adam and Eve for the fall.

It was probably a mistake for me to even enter into a thread on such an emotional subject, but if we can’t discuss facts about emotional subjects, what does that say about our ability to confront those subjects?

More than one in five men report “becoming so sexually aroused that they could not stop themselves from having sex, even though the woman did not consent.”
Does it say what the circumstances were?

These sound to me like seductions-gone-wrong (where the woman suddenly changes her mind after he already has his pants down, and I can certainly understand how he would be unwilling to stop at that point; I think there is even a word for women who wait that long to say “No”), rather than instances of actual rape.

im not attacking you…im attacking that statement…

Not in the summary I read. And it’s worth pointing out too that the original question was about “sexual assault”, not “rape”. I think the former term has a broader meaning than the latter, and would certainly cover the case you bring up, even if no actual intercourse took place.

jmcrae has it correct. I have been there and I’m telling you it was about Power and Control not sex. Rapists are insecure people who want to feel powerful and strong. If they can overpower another person, they feel in control for once in their lives.

They say she asked for it by her dress because they don’t want to think that their power trip was rape. they want to feel powerful AND get away with it. Date rape drugs are for the even more insecure… they can’t overpower the person without drugging them first so they do what they have to do to be stronger and more in control.

So you think the study was flawed in their finding that "More than one in five men report “becoming so sexually aroused that they could not stop themselves from having sex, even though the woman did not consent.”? This is certainly not my field of expertise, so I was just quoting what I took to be an authoritative statement.

I think that immodest dress contributes to the objectification of women. And** that** contributes to sexual assaults.

I hate that fashion people are designing “sexy” clothes for little girls and young teens. It seems to me that type of dressing contributes to sexual assaults on children.

Maybe the link is in a general degradation of morality that affects our society as a whole.

I do think that arousal has a component in sexual assault. But, it seems to me that sexual predators are aroused by odd things.

An excellent point about the objectification of women. And why parents put up with it regarding their own daughters is a truly astounding mystery.

Well, other than the circumstances I cited, this just seems so unlikely - have we been permitting a class of people to run our businesses and governments these past 500 years who can’t even control their own thoughts and actions when they glimpse a person of the opposite sex? One glimmer and that’s it, they go hormonal?

And yet, female hormones are often cited as the reason that women can’t or shouldn’t be allowed to participate in business or politics, because we are so liable to “lose control.”

I think you hit the nail on the head with that one.

they ARE sexually aroused, but you can’t assume tht they will be aroused by the sight of scantily clad women. That would be average men. (And no we should not tempt average men to lustful thoughts or attempts at seduction by dressing immodestly! but that is another subject.) Rapists tend to be aroused by helplessness, in whatever for it takes…Children, elderly people, Young Girls who stare at their feet when they walk (no confidence), etc.

BTW I voted maybe, sometimes people dress in a way that conveys that they have no self-respect. That may or may not be immodest or “Sexy”.

I can see the time when the society of America becomes so decadent that the remaining folks who claim some sort of clear headedness will call for a Muslim majority if only to stem the tide of immorality and put an end to Porn on the internet, imodest dress, and any thing else associated with a prurid society. We will be begging for a theocratic influence in our courts and lawmakers.

Mark my word, It Will Happen.

But thats some way off.

I agree. Immodest dress & behavior in general, contributes to the likelyhood of such assualts. Not necessarily just the dress & behavior of the victim herself.

Sexual assault and rape of women by men ALWAYS involves men asserting power over women. I can’t conceptualize how it wouldn’t and I don’t think anyone disagrees with that. If that was the ONLY factor, then how the woman dresses should not matter. I don’t think, however, that this is the ONLY factor. I think a perverse sexual satisfaction also enters into the act for some men. How many? Most? A few? All? I have no idea. But if it is a factor in some cases, then logically that would be affected in some degree by how the woman dresses because how the woman dresses can affect lustful desires in men.

From all the documentaries i’ve see, rape is usually not about sex. It is about violence, domination, vengeance, or mental illness. I saw a documentary about a woman naked on the street , people looked then deviated their eyes and considered her crazy; nobody tried to rape her or even approach her. Likewise many rapists raped very decent women who were even in their houses. I even saw a documentary on rape in Afghanistan go figure! Women must dress decently because they can cause some men to lust, but not because of rape fear since a rapist will rape even a nun; yes this happened and was put on news, 4 men raped a nun.

i hear you, but what are conservative Christians doing? it’s separation between Church and state. You must vote for Christian Sharia 👍

I think there are two basic kinds of rape: Your straightforward criminal rape (include date rape by drug) and the hot-and-bothered date rape by a male who doesn’t know when “no” means “no”. The first kind is not influenced by clothing in the least. The second kind is to some degree, owing to the differences in communication of the sexes.

Women dress sexy, thinking to be attractive, approved, validated. Men, who are mostly visual, don’t usually see a woman who needs to be validated. They see a woman who is hot for a good time. For her to say “no” can be confusing, like she is sending two different signals at the same time. (Ah, but why should chastity only be a female responsibility?)

Most men don’t come by interpersonal skills naturally. That’s why we need more fathers in this country who act like fathers and greet the date at the door with questions like, “Where do you come from? Who are your people? Does insanity run in your family? If you want to date my daughter you have to memorize the 10 Commandments and agree to abide by them. Oh, and bring her back no later than 7:30 p.m.–TONIGHT, that is.”

All young girls need a good Texas dad with a loaded .22.

I don’t think any woman asks to be raped.

I do wonder if the type of clothing a woman wears might feed into the hatred a raptist has for women. It could work both ways. A rapist could hate his mother because she was very she dressed like a school marm and beat him for simply being male.

Looking at the question scientifically, Yes, the way that a women dresses does affect the possibility of sexual assault. For example, a woman wearing head phones would more likely to be a target.

I tried to find some statistics, but could not, regarding whether women dressed more provacatively are raped more. I did find this interesting treatise on the subject that explores the complex subject of rape. There are many different types of rape. There are different theories as to the cause of rape. Check out these links and you’ll find a wealth of information.

From what I can see, there aren’t many statistics available regarding the likelihood of being raped based on one’s dress. I think commonsense, though, indicates that putting one’s self into certain situations can increase one’s likelihood of being raped.

As far as the Mullah’s statements, they were irresponsible and show a lack of intellectual understanding of the complexity of the subject matter.
