i am simply asking in your opinion if the chances would decrease if Modesty in dress is observed.

thank you
No. Rape happens in all communities, including those communities that make women cover up. However rape is lower in countries that allow women to wear what they like because these countries also have tough laws against rape. i know many folks in uk who go abroad to find that men in some foreign countries use the modest dress code as an excuse to assault any women who don’t adopt modest dress. I find it unlikely that these men don’t assault their own women (however modestly dressed) since they can’t keep their hands off any woman.

…or “Nice to meet you. Come on in and let me show you my knife collection…” 🙂
I have a feeling that was a very Texas Protestant thing for me to have said. For some reason, after posting that, I remembered a television special I saw one time where Ted Nugent (wild man of Rock) appeared with his two daughters. He’s from Michigan, I think, but moved to Texas supposedly because he likes the gun laws. He actually lives in my county. It was obvious that his daughters really look up to him as a wise and protective dad. He told them to be careful on dates and “protect the sacred tools.”

Concerning the Texas father, there is one problem with the story. 😉 He is letting his young daughter go out alone, unsupervised. This is going to increase her chances of getting pawed.

I think looking vulnerable increases the risk of assault. Vulnerability could easily be communicated by dress, but not necessarily provacative dress. It could include wearing a leg brace. I think young seems vulnerable, also. Dress can easily communicate youth. It is culturally based what clothes communicate youth, however. It doesn’t have to be trashy clothing. I think how a girl walks and acts communicates youth and vulnerablity as well.

I think being vulnerable is more important than looking vulnerable. Certain situations increase the danger. This for me is the KEY factor.

I agree. Immodest dress & behavior in general, contributes to the likelyhood of such assualts. Not necessarily just the dress & behavior of the victim herself.
I very much agree with that. Because in my opinion the dress is A component of the reason of assault. It isnt the only reason but it is a factor.

Modesty in generall will lessen the % of assualt. But different societies differ on what Modesty is.

hi,
I just read the thread about the Australian Imam . I think his way of expressing his idea was very crude. But i wonder if he is wrong in principle.

I personally believe that women way of dress can considerably affect the possibilities of sexual assault.

Do you ?

Please lets keep this thread civil.

thanks

If you walked down the street dressed as a wrestler would you expect someone to come out and tackle you and wrestle you to the ground?

What Islam wants is the abrogation of responsibility of men. A man has a problem with sexual hang-ups, so rather than deal with that, lock the woman up, or cover her from head-to-toe.

A man assaults a woman, sexually, she’s at fault.

So, to use the Imam’s analogy he’s comparing men to animals!

Using my own analogy…
If you walk down the street and you see a diamond on the street do you have every right to pocket this and keep it?

Modesty is fairly subjective.

This is exactly what I ment to say when I talked of young girls walking around looking at their feet.

What’s ‘modest’ for you is not for some. It’d be an easy excuse for any man to simply suggest that whatever she’s wearing was immodest. Men need to learn to take responsibility for their own actions

Rapists tend to be aroused by helplessness, in whatever for it takes…Children, elderly people, Young Girls who stare at their feet when they walk (no confidence), etc.
Thanks for pointing this out. I’ve been thinking about this subject for a while and your words have helped me make sense of it. While I don’t know about statistics on the subject, in my personal experience I have found what you said to be true as well. Conversely, I have also known would-be-rapists to assault women who seem extra invulnerable, who they perceive to have more power (or even more holiness) than themselves. In those cases it seems that the sexual assault is the perp’s attempt to forcefully make a woman helpless.

Which pretty much amounts to the same underlying motivation.

I am no feminist, but I really think they’re on to something when they say that rape (outside the context of date rape) is fundamentally more about power than about sex.

Meedo, to answer your last question quickly; the answer would be ‘no’. . .a qualified ‘no’.

As has been set forth by many (thanks, jrabs!), what women wear has NO effect in either attracting or deterring rape, despite media reports or the wails of caught rapists. Having women dress ‘more modestly’ would NOT result in ‘fewer rapes’ because as I said rape is about POWER, not about sexual lust or sexual responsiveness.

Having men take responsibility for their refusal to control their power lust and be educated enough to realize that women aren’t packages for their consumption would result in fewer rapes.
PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.

If a person rapes, murders, covets, desires… the sin is THEIR fault. not the fault of the object of the crime.

always.

no wishy washy “she was wearing a short skirt so i…”

complete nonsense.

the perp is ALWAYS at fault. and no, the temptation is in the mind of the assailant, NOT the victim.

thats the society we live in… blaming everything on everybody else when the truth is you can only control yourself…
No - I do not believe it affects the possiblity.

Which is why an elderly grandma in a housedress gets raped.

Or a baby girl in a diaper.

Or a young boy dressed like an altar boy.

Clothing has nothing to do with it. I think a rapist is turned on by power & opportunity not a slinky outfit.

Regarding the post where the men in prison claimed the women asked for it… that’s what they tell themselves to shift the guilt.
The ones in their underwear would be more likely to be solicited for sex, but being solicited for sex is not the same thing as being “sexually assaulted.”

Also, a man thinking 'I would like to have sex with her" is not thinking like a rapist.

A rapist doesn’t think about sex at all - he is thinking about power and about inflicting pain. A rapist isn’t looking for someone who looks sexy, but rather, for someone he can inflict pain on without getting caught.
Thank you to all I have quoted, (& several others as well!)…You have said this so well.
To those who are quoting from what rapists have said, or some (unknown & therefore unproven) group of men who say otherwise: What do you expect them to say? They are rapists…the lowest kind of human behaviour on earth, and you expect them not to lie??? Of course they say it is somebody else’s fault! It lets them claim they are somehow being oppressed…
A couple of people have touched on this but I want to say it again: Nuns have been raped. When was the last time you saw a nun trying to look sexy???

As far as the imam, or any other person who says something similarly ignorant, goes, when they are the victims of a violent crime, are they going to refuse to prosecute because the criminal was somehow “tempted”? Of course not!
It’s the old saying all over: “Everything depends on whose ox has been gored”.

Thank you for your responses.

Please look at the headline of the question carefully.

I am NOT saying rape is ok

I am NOT saying that women are asking for it.

I am NOT saying that they deserve to be raped

I am NOT saying that rapists shouldnt be punished ( In Islam its death penalty for rape)

I am simply asking if modest dress would decrease the chances of sexual assualt ?

Please answer accordingly

thanks
OK, the answer is NO.

T Nuns have been raped. When was the last time you saw a nun trying to look sexy???
They are raped because the Rapist sees them as thinking they are “above sexuality” and they want to prove they have power even over a nun.

Exactly! It’s about power, & it’s about hating women. It’s not about sex at all.

I agree too. It’s a nonsense to say this is about sex. Obviously al-lah didn’t realise that when he got women to be covered up:thumbsup:

👍 I agree with Carol Marie.

put the blame where it belongs…on the" looker" and not the “lookee”

how come in your profile you list yourself as Catholic but on another thread today you said ‘allah is the greatest’?

just wondering.
Perhaps, he is really a Muslim pretending to be a Christian? Its very easy to do, and we had Pro_Universal doing that!
