I alwaus enjoy talking about tithing in our home and was wondering if any religions really follow the rule to a T and if so what rules do you follow. Do you HAVE to tithe to recieve blessings? or is it optional at your church

also if your Catholic do you pay 10%?

LDS pay 10% as you know. Also if you were really a Catholic which I think you would know that We pay what we can.

“TROLL ALEART look at the other posts”

The International Churches of Christ teach a compulsory minimum of a tithe of gross income. The compulsion and the tithe both being contrary to the Bible.

i’m not a troll I just wanted to start a discussion. My gosh I will leave if you all are going to be like that! How rude! and most Catholics pay about 1-5%. I was wondering if anyone payed the full 10%!

No, 10% tithing is not mandatory in Catholicism or any other church that follows the New Testament:
On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come. - (1 Cor 16:2)
Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. - (2 Cor 9:7)
Paul

I don’t think you are a troll. I have read your other posts. But the way you phrased your question would make people think you are not Catholic.

God bless you,
Paul

acatholic,

This is not directly related to your post, but related to the general theme of your posts and what your family is going through.

If you haven’t checked out the info about Mormonism on Catholic Answers’ website, catholic.com/library/noncatholic_groups.asp, please feel free to do so.

I believe CA has full-length books on the topic that you also might be interested in.

Orthodox Jews tithe 10% to charity, and sometimes 20%…but we are forbidden to tithe more than 20% (because some might be too zealous and end up depriving their families of necessities.)

Sorry this is off topic- Is that the *International Churches of Christ that evolved from the Crossroads movement Church Of Christ? *

If it is, been there, done that in college in the 80’s!

The Beginning of My Faith Journey to the Catholic Church

As to the topic at hand the Catholic Church to my knowledge just asks you to give what you can. Our family (And this is in general) pay about 5% Tithe and 5% to Charity like St. Vincent De Paul but it varies and there is no hard and fast rule.

PS; Hubby was confirmed this past Sunday:D

I think mandatory tithing is bad. The churches get the money tax-free and the church-goers get a tax break. This leaves less money for the government.

I think people should give what they feel they can, and not get a write-off on their taxes for it. It’s a big scam, unless people give freely from thier own hearts and pockets. That goes for charity too.

Currently I am unemployed and pulling no income. I can freely give 10% of nothing, I have done that a few times.

10% after taxes… most goes to the parish, but other goes to pro-life or other Catholic Charities or causes (Peter’s Pence, Mission Sunday, etc.)

I’ve heard that some will tithe from their before tax net, but we don’t because that money isn’t directly accessible to us. Of course it gets complicated if you want to consider the benefit we receive from our tax dollars… it gets complicated… we also tithe off our tax returns.

Of course, when I was a broke college student with gobs of debt over my head I didn’t tithe but a $20 here or there.

The point is, the Catholic Church doesn’t require 10%. Other religions such as Mormons mandate it or you are denied certain privileges. I give what I can, but I don’t expect any tax breaks from it, and the Catholic Church doesn’t penalize people who don’t give anything.

I know what the Catholic Church believes. I just wanted to include everyone in the posts. I personally don’t think Mormons are Christians and that they are giving thier 10% to build a false religion. But that is just me

What I find interesting is that everyone talks of how “money-grubbing” the RCC is, yet they are the one church that does NOT advocate tithing!

Sure, I pay 10%…in Talent and Time. If you ask me, the Catholic Church is bigger on that than money…though Lord knows we need some of that, too!

Baptists are pretty big on Tithing and Offerings too, as far as I can remember.

If they don’t advocate it (as you say), then why do they pass the basket for money at Sunday Mass???

“Tithe” means to give one-tenth, like Mormons are required to do in order to hold a temple recommend. Catholics are not required to give anything, though everybody who is able is expected to contribute something to the Parish to keep the lights on; hence the basket. In our Parish the recommended contribution is one hour’s wage - if individual circumstances allow. In practice, most people put a one or five dollar bill in the basket.

I actually believe that tithing involves much more than 10% [First fruits, sabbatical and jubilee years, freeing slaves and foregiving debts - are all associated with giving to God] but Sepharad could speak to that in greater detail I think …

The funny thing I think of when christians discuss tithing … that’s OT, etc ----- NT says … we are to give from our hearts - joyful giving, etc … ] is that we believe that we should [can?] start at zero …

For the gift of God to man which was - Moses, the Law and the Prophets … a proscribed tithe [of 10%] was given … I am sure that God desired the Hebrew people to give joyfully and from their hearts …

As Christians we have Moses, the Law and the Prophets PLUS the Messiah, Salvation, the forgiveness of sins, the Church, the Sacraments [epsecially Baptism, Reconcilliation and EUCHAIRST - the very Body and Blood of Christ!], the New Testament … and we give ?? … ?? … 0% … uh whatever feels good to me today …

Jesus tell of the widow who gave 2 mites from her need. That small gift was far more than the 10% given by the Rich Man from his abundnce …

We are to give from our need … a gift from our abundance is not truly a gift … it is just left overs … All of our wealth [health, happiness, talent and intelligence] all come from God …

It is not hard to get to 10% plus of gross when you make thanking God for your gifts a priority …

No the church does not demand it … the gift should come from your heart …

We target 5-6% for our parish [some of which goes to Social justice out reach] and 4-5% other charitable causes … at the end of the year we usually hit about 12-17% and we cannot capture all charitable donations… and of course this does not take into account other parish support via fund raisers like spaghetti and other dinners, script sales, book fares, car washes, food items …
