Does your church have 10% tithing and if your Catholic do you pay 10%

Only farmers were tithed. Jesus was a carpenter.

I didn’t say churches shouldn’t receive tax free dollars.

I just said that people who get tax breaks for titheing are adding to the tax burden of others who do not tithe.

My main point is there is no where in the NT that specifies 10%.

Jesus abolished the old laws. We don’t do animal sacrifice any more and we shouldn’t be tithed. It should be VOLUNTARY.

The biblical tithe–a literal 10% and you can play the before/after tax debate–should be the norm for all denominations. I’ve seen charts that show that mormons and evangelicals give the most to church and charities in general. Liberal Protestants need to up their giving because they are dying fast. Catholics by contrast still have the numbers, so very few tithe their money. I think very few even do the math to see how little percentage wise they actually give. And I don’t buy the “my labor counts as money” bit. Tithe AND volunteer!
As someone earlier pointed out, by volunteering to do certain jobs, they save the parish money that the parish otherwise would have to pay to get the same job done. That is the same as giving monetarily, in my opinion!

My DH volunteers to do a job at our parish that requires 1000+ hours per year. Others have done this job in the past and been paid for it. He refused to be paid, saying that this is our family’s contribution to our parish. Now, not only does the parish get HIM, but they also get me and our kids, now that the kids are old enough to work as well. So, the parish gets about 1500+ hours of FREE labor from our family each year. Calculated at the rate of $10 per hour (what they offered to start paying him nearly 10 years ago), the parish saves over $15,000 PER YEAR based on what we contribute, time-wise and labor-wise. There is NO WAY we could afford to contribute $15,000 each year; yet we do have the time and labor to contribute. This is $15,000 a year our parish does not have to pay someone! (more probably, figuring in cost of living adjustments, taxes, insurance, etc.)

S - the CC does put pressure on people to give, but they do not demand a tithe. They use guilt.

I think mandatory tithing is bad. The churches get the money tax-free and the church-goers get a tax break. This leaves less money for the government.

I think people should give what they feel they can, and not get a write-off on their taxes for it. It’s a big scam, unless people give freely from thier own hearts and pockets. That goes for charity too.
Sorry if I misquoted you earlier. So if there is no modern biblical standard for giving, I guess it means adding more bingo nights and raffles to the mix. I would rather reach down and give more to something if I truly believed in it. By your tone I sense bitterness, so best not to give unless your heart is right with the church.

tithing, um at our church (Baptist) we have, offering, which I believe is what catholics call it, do yall pass a bowl around and put money into it?

The ushers come down the rows with a basket attached to a long pole.

Sure, I pay 10%…in Talent and Time. If you ask me, the Catholic Church is bigger on that than money…though Lord knows we need some of that, too!

Baptists are pretty big on Tithing and Offerings too, as far as I can remember.
Great point about time.
10% means 2.4 hours (2 hours, 24 minutes) per day.
… or is it waking hours?
1.6 hours (1 hour, 36 minutes per day).

I think we include in this the time we spend being charitable to those we come in contact with every day. (What you do for the least of these …)

I love your quote by the way…

There’s no “mandatory” tithe (how could you enforce such a thing). 10% is suggested as a goal. I think the denominational average for my communion is around 3% of income.

As a pastor, I tithe - mainly, because I have been blessed. Also, I was raised to give God my first and best. I also tithe as an example to the congregation.

O+

I was reading on the" Ask an Apologist" that " Tithing is an Old Testament precept no longer binding on Christians".

I’m thinking waking hours…which means the 1 hour, 36 minutes is completely subjective. Some people sleep less than others. Personally, I end up putting in something like eight hours per week, sometimes more depending on what needs to be done. Lately it’s been setting up before/cleaning up after hospitality and church-sitting.

Amen! Catholics are very service oriented in general…hence the St. Vincent De Paul Society and the plethora of Catholic Charities out there. Most importantly, I’ve seen a lot of Catholics give with a smile on their face…not because they were guilted into it or needed it for some kind of Temple Pass, but because they want to. Because it feels good to give. Because it’s the right thing to do. Those types of people are the quintessential Catholic.

There was this guy that spoke at my Legion of Mary meeting once and brought up that quote. It’s a great, deep quote. 👍
I love your quote by the way…
Thanks! 🙂

Tithing is a mandatory 10%…offerings are whatever you can give.

I will say though (I’m not Catholic, btw), that I know Catholics with kids in parochial school, and they MUST give a certain amount in the collection each week, in addition to their tuition. Not sure what that’s all about, but I think the tuition is kept lower by the fact that they have to do that. Maybe someone else here can explain it better.
When my daughter attended parochial school the agreement with the parish was that I would pay a tithe to the parish…but no one ever asked to see a payroll check.

Tithing, like other parts of the Mosaic law…DES NOT APPLY AS MANDATORY to gentile Christians. However, 10% is a good place to start…and I come close to it on one side or the other. It doesn’t always go to the parish though…sometimes other organizations merit my money as well.

As Catholics we are required to support our parish…no percentages are given.

Wow, you gave me a good laugh there! :rotfl:

I hope you’re not too serious. If so, hopefully things have turned around for you by now. Still, you tickled my funny bone with that one!
I am glad. I am semi-serious. If I don’t have any income, writing checks depletes the account and checks. Still looking for work. When I have money, I do give.

To poster who said that the 10% helps the church with missions etc; a few times there has been a second collection for whatever, plus, there is currently a drive for the…Bishopric of the area, I think. If we give any more money than is the amount required, it goes to our church.

And, it’s not that we have taken guilt from the Jewish religion, it is Catholic guilt is the FULFILLMENT of Jewish guilt. This is what has always been prophesized.
