Does your non-Catholic Christian church teach you about Catholicism?

What have you heard? Is it a secret, or can you share it with us?

What does your non-Catholic Christian Church teach you about Catholicism? Be honest and don’t pull any punches, we Catholics can handle it.

Are there any specific things about Catholicism that are keeping you from ever becoming Catholic?

Please share with us Catholics a summary of what it is that you are actually taught or what it is that you believe about Catholicism.

No it doesn’t ; we are taught, among other things, how to live better Christian lives without reference to other Christian confessions …

I can only attest to what Southern Baptists/Landmarkist do. I grew up in a small church in the Upstate of South Carolina that commonly mentioned “the whore of Babylon” and went to great pains to make the congregation aware of Catholicism. I remember when Pope John Paul II came to Columbia, S.C. back in the '80’s. Our pastor gave an entire sermon on how the anti-Christ was visiting our state.

Add in the Bob Jones University factor. Nestled in between two large highways in Greenville (Pleasantburg Dr. and Wade Hampton Blvd.), the school the runs from preschool all the way through post-grad. It’s notoriously anti-Catholic. Although its art museum is just … AWESOME. It’s chock-full of Catholic art, altars, and even papal vestments. It’s a must see if you’re ever in the area … just don’t crack out a rosary on their campus!

Also, occassionally, some of the area Baptist churches in the Upstate will gather to hold a week-long series of evening classes on Catholicism. The last one I attended was in 2002 at Hampton Park Baptist and was called “To Open Their Eyes.” I was kicked out of this one, as I was a Catholic and kept questioning the “experts” and correcting them about what I, as a Catholic, believe. Go figure.

A story about the conference can be read at forum.cygnus-study.com/showthread.php?t=2594

No.

Why should it?

The only thing I’ve heard concerning Catholics in my meeting was quote from George Fox…

“All christians are believers, both Protestants and Papists; The Lord opened to me that if all were believers, then they were all born of God, and had passed from death to life; [becoming a new creature, old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new] and that none were true believers unless that had happened; and though others said they were believers, yet they were not.”

True believers…are those whom have experienced Christ and live a life demonstrating that experience…if one hasn’t experienced Christ in a life changing encounter then it doesn’t matter what church sign is in front of the building they meet in.

Has your pastor ever taught about other religions, such as Islam? Have they ever had a comparitive study of other groups? Is another denomination ever brought up in Sunday school?

I’m a Catholic in the Alabama. There is a local pastor who has a section of his church’s website to “teaching” about “Roman Catholicism.” I used “” above because his efforts are neither teaching nor reflect what the Church teaches/believes.
Here’s the site: Fountain of Grace Church

Reminds me of Bishop Sheen’s quote…

No I haven’t been taught anything about Catholicism by my church(Lutheran).

Hi Jimmy B.!

I think you may find this thread interesting. I started it in May of last year. Were you taught negative information about another faith in your church?

Peace

We don’t have any specific teaching on comparative christian theology in our christian education programs at my church but I can say that, when I’ve taught Sunday Schools and an issue like that has come up, that I’ve handled the Catholic church like any other denomination - They believe xyz and here’s why… We believe abc and here’s why…

I try to handle the topic with all charity and fairness and I’m sure to point out that Catholics are our brothers and sisters just like Presbyterians and Methodists and Baptists and so on. There are ‘good’ catholics and bad ‘catholics’ just like there are ‘good’ and ‘bad’ people in our church and in churches all over the world. We disagree on some things… important things… but what divides us is ultimately secondary to what unites us - Jesus. They believe in the same Jesus we do and, at the end of the day, that’s what really matters.

Same here in my Baptist Church. Never in all my years has a preacher of mine said a word about Catholicism. We are taught how to live a better Christian life. We don’t spend our time worrying about the Catholic Church.

I have gone to Episcopal, Orthodox, Methodist, non-denominational, and Foursquare churches. At none of them was Catholicism ever taught about. Catholicism may have come up at the Episcopal or the Orthodox church in conversation with church members, but I don’t remember anyone ever saying anything besides “they believe some things different than we do, but they’re still Christian” or such.

This is a good point. You should make your own judgement of the truth based on all the facts after doing research to back up what you believe. You should chose your faith by reading scripture and drawing your own conclusions with the help of the Holy Spirit. That is how I maintain my faith and why I remain an avid member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.

I would think that a Lutheran would be taught a little about Catholicism, especially during confirmation classes and on Reformation Sunday. Which synod are you?

I have been taught about the Catholic church to quite an extent. I have studied the reformation, so I truly have to understant where the Catholic church was at that point. I also attended a Catholic school from K through 6 and have resumed a Catholic education as a 9th grader. I am not Catholic, nor will I ever be, but I understand the faith quie well and have, as such, drawn the conclusion that the Lutheran church (Missouri Synod) is the closest to correct as is possible in today’s world.

Hello kellO618,

I went to the link that you provided and what I saw, were some comments made by, what I am assuming, are well intended but misinformed Catholic lay people here a CAF. I did not see any “quote” posted, attributed to any Catholic Popes, the Catechism of the Catholic Church or the Magisterium.

I think you my be confusing Catholic Apologetics, which involves the defense of Catholicism and the differences in beliefs that we have with other faiths, with those things written by lay Catholics who are doing their best to defend their own Catholic Faith.

You will not find any negativity towards any religion, in what Catholics are actually taught by the Roman Catholic Church or what is actually said during a Roman Catholic Mass.

God Bless You

Hi Jimmy,

I am confused. I don’t know what you are talking about.:confused::confused:
I am Catholic. I teach adult Catechesis at my parish. I didn’t say that the Catholic Church teaches anything negative about other faiths and in my posts said to the contrary. I just thought you may have found interest in the thread and the responses given there. Never mind, sorry to have wasted your time.

Well it comes up at confirmation for sure. We visit the Orthodox and Catholic church and take a tour and visit.
Never in the sermon that I recall.
