Mine still doesn’t. Feels like maybe half are still saying “And also with you.” etc., while the other half is saying “And with your spirit.”

It’s like that for all of the new parts, except for the Creed, probably because Father says it along with us, and people pick up the missalettes to read along.

I kind of wish Father would remind everyone before Mass that we are using the new responses. When I visit other parishes they seem to know them much better than ours.

And you?

Same in mine. It doesn’t even appear that people who normally have their noses stuck in their missals are giving the proper response. I have to admit that I’m having to follow closely in the missal or the folder and using a missal is not something I’m used to doing. My own worst time is at the dialogue prior to the Gospel. I haven’t been holding anything at that point and “And also with you” just trips off the tongue.

The only part I have to read from is the Creed, long and a lot of changes! Honestly, I think a lot of the parishioners don’t really care. I know there are some that are tripping up even though they are trying, but I think a lot just don’t think about it and keep saying the old ones.

Our pastor actually complimented us last night on how well we have learned the new responses. I have been surprised myself at how well it has gone. Of course we still have people who say the old responses, but it has gotten better. I thought we would have much more of a struggle. I personally am grateful for the new Mass, it has made me pay much better attention. Father has been very good about pointing out what page we can find the appropriate responses on and that has helped.

I thought I was getting used to it, then I went to Mass this last weekend and at the very first response I loudly replied “And also w…” and stopped halfway through and probably went a bit pink.

It didn’t help that I have to sit in the front row as my Dad is mobility impaired and finds the communion queue impossible, so there I was, audible to our Parish Priest making a mistake. I think I shrank a little.

I reckon about half are still saying the old responses. Most people are still refer to the pew cards when reciting the new Creed, etc.

We are almost there, but we have been using the new responses in the UK since September. Not everyone yet knows the Creed off by heart so they need to read the liturgy cards, but that will come with time.

The only problem is at the Peace. The priest says “The Peace of the Lord be always with you” and most wrongly reply “And also with you”!! I think it is a reflex from the Priest saying “you” immediatly prior to the response.

They seem to, but it didn’t take long for the priest and deacons to start fiddling around.

We do pretty well. On Sundays most read the Creed (including me) The one that gets me almost everyday is “It is right and just.” I have had an “also with …spirit” come out of me too. I think I have it and it pops out. For me the Gospel was the hardest to change but I usually get it right now.

Im still messing up: “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed."

should say soul shall

I understand the background and reasoning as to why this was changed, but the old version happened to be my favorite response in the RC Mass.

Peace be with you!

I am still usually forgetting to use the shorter “It is right and just.” Other than that, I still have to use the the response card for the Gloria and definitely the Creed - They’ve only been used once per week (Sunday) at our parish, so it’s kinda hard to get to know it if you don’t actively try to memorize it outside of church. I finally have “and with your spirit” down, at least, along with everything else.

One of our priests is still saying “Through Him, with Him, and in Him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit…” haha I guess he just doesn’t know that part changed. It’s the parts that the priest is used to saying without a book that they are forgetting to say here. It happens at the Sanctus too with another of our priests - 'Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might…" - but ah well. Our parish as a whole I think has them all down pretty well - it sounds like and almost completely unified response to me for most of them!

I imagine that parishes that were better catechized about the reasons for the change are doing a better job at learning them. Parishes in which the priest has gone into this dragging his feet are going to take a very long time to learn them. I go to a few different parishes regularly, and both of them have adjusted very well- the transition felt very natural. Those parishes are also known for their orthodoxy, which I am certain makes a difference.

i visit a number of different parishes depending on work and i have noticed a lot of priests have not changed to holy, holy holy lord God of hosts.
it has got to the stage that i’m wondering is there some reason priests are holding onto the former response, of course when the priest leads the prayer most follow what he says.

Kind of.

Most people are clinging to those pew cards like a life preserver.

I’ve pretty much given up hope that I’ll ever learn them. I think my mind is much slower now that I’m in my 50s. I have a terrible time memorizing anything. Perhaps it’s “Password Overload.” Too much to memorize these days just to survive modern times. I should probably buy my own personal pew card so that I don’t ever have to be without one.

What’s really upending people in our parish is the “chant.” I have not met anyone who likes it. Even some of the sweetest people in the parish grimace when someone mentions “the chant.” I think it is fair to say that the attempt at chanting went over like a big fat lead balloon. At first people tried to do it, but at this point, very few people even attempt it, and most just stand there and listen to the cantor. Only a few of the cantors can actually do it. The children’s choir sounds really good at it, but they only sing at one Mass once a month. Too bad.

We are switching to a different Mass setting (Mass of Our Lady), and IMO, it’s sure nice to sing a melody again! :extrahappy:

Our priest started singing the Mass to help us learn it. I’m so happy 🙂

Our parish is LARGE… and you can hear the mistakes through out… My theory.
  1. Lots of us are just stumbling over our memorized response. I think I have it, then I don’t.Sometimes I’m armwrestling my child, and I just respond with “my line”, forgetting it changed.
  2. It may be “new” to some in the last week or so. Since not everyone gets to mass every week. Sad but true.
Now… I went to my old much smaller parish a few weeks ago. The priest there is ON IT! He RESPONDS loudly with the crowd during the crowd’s turn. He loudly guides them in the appropriate response. They have it down!!! I imagine by Easter he will not be assisting!

I think people are trying VERY hard but they’re just so used to the old way that it’s difficult for them.

For the most part everyone in my parish is trying. Sometimes you hear “And with you” followed by a “d’oh!” or “Ugh!” which is an expression of frustration when they realize they gave the wrong response. 🙂

The rest of the responses people seem to be following in the missal so they’re getting it right.

I really like the new responses. And one little tid-bit, my husband told me that the changes weren’t anything new to him. We go to mass in Spanish and I didn’t realize it since I’m new to Catholicism- but he said that the new English reponses are as the mass has been said in Spanish for as long as he can remember.
