In my Irish traveller culture we believe if a dog howls that he’s howling someone’s life away in my Father’s Day they’d kill a dog if it howled at night to stop it howling someone’s life away but now in my day they take the dog far away and abandon it id love to know where this idea came from also does anyone else believe this? My cocker spaniel howled the other night my dad wanted to dump it but I wouldn’t allow it because I don’t believe in superstition

Of course not. That’s insane. It makes as much sense as the idea that if you spill salt you’ll have seven years bad luck or that having your picture taken steals your soul or whatever. It’s nonsense.

I’ve heard a superstition that if you see a black dog or wolf, it means someone close to you is going to die soon, but I’ve always understood that the omen was an image of the dog, not an actual dog, and I’ve never heard that attempting to get rid of the dog will stave off the inevitable.

You want to know the real reason in your dad’s day they killed a dog that howled in the night? BECAUSE THE DOG HOWLED ALL NIGHT!

Some dogs have been known to sense seizures, heart attacks, and strokes early on, before the person gets really bad. If a dog is howling around someone, it might make better sense to take that person to the doc, then to bump off te dog.

Dogs can sense danger and also sense if the owner or neighbor is going to die .They can even see evil spirits and howl

Psalm 59:6 Each evening they come back, howling like dogs and prowling about the city.14 Each evening they come back, howling like dogs and prowling about the city.15 They roam about for food, and growl if they do not get their fill.

Evil spirits also take the form of dogs as st padre pio and st Theresa’s of Avila experienced

St Don Bosco also experienced angles come in the form of a dog while he went to places on the streets, to protect him and also the house and disappear in the morning. When Father Bosco was asked to give an opinion on the nature of the grey dog “…he admitted that the dog was a creature worthy of note in his life. Although saying that the dog was an angel would have certainly made people laugh, nevertheless he had to admit that he was not a common dog. Don Bosco often thought about the origin of that dog and he admitted that he had been a true gift from Providence.”

I actually knew a guy who believed this. Most of us still forced him to take pictures with us, much to his chagrin. Everyone laughed about it, though, including him.

I should make sure that my friend with a black lab starts forgetting that I exist…😈

Superstitious nonsense. Growing up we had a dog that would howl when a certain piece of music was played. That experiment could be repeated and confirmed every time.

The ability of human beings to believe all sorts of nonsense is timeless.

I know it’s terrible, I don’t think dogs should be killed or dumped it won’t change what’s going to happen anyway but I do believe if an otherwise quiet dog howls someone will die it has happened to many times to be a coincidence that night my dog howled my brother in laws cousin died in a car accident, but I still have her I wouldn’t get rid of her for the world she’s the Apple of my eye

As long as some believe in evil spirits , their entering into animals etc, these types of blind beliefs will continue

That wasn’t my point. My point is that every culture has some folklore or superstition, as I said.
The Irish aren’t unique in that regard.

Often the folklore is rooted in fact as shown by this thread observing correctly that dogs can often sense a health problem in their owner, perhaps by their sense of smell or hearing or just being really attuned to small changes.

I first wrote ‘Christians’ instead of ‘some’ in my above post but then thought it may be offensive even if it was correct, hence changed.Any how my point is only that there scope for so many such blind beliefs. When we believe that evil spirits are there and physically roaming around to wrong people, there is no harm in believing that some dogs may be able to atleast 'smell ’ their presence and hence howl as no doubt they have got more smelling power than humans.

A dog smelling has nothing to do with “evil spirits” and everything to do with the fact that someone who is suffering from a serious medical condition may be exuding a chemical smell in their perspiration, their breath, their excrement, etc. that the dog can pick up on and realize it is not the normal odor of the person. The dog may also be attuned to hear changes in breathing or heartbeat that human hearing wouldn’t detect without a stethoscope.
