Actually, it’s ground up dairy cows (whose productivity had slumped), along with–in the case of the McDonald’s Corporation, some corn filler laced with ammonia (to kill E.coli). I highly recommend seeing the documentary film FOOD, INC., if you are interested in what the big conglomerates are doing to your food. Don’t worry, the film does not tout veganism or vegetarianism. Doesn’t even use the** v **word. But the thought might cross your mind, when a mother who lost her young son to a hamburger, stomps on Washington in an effort to get the government to start paying attention to what our large corporations are doing in the name of “food.”

SEE the trailer 4 the documentary film FOOD, INC. here: bit.ly/FOODINK
I read your posting and a shudder runs up my spine as I remember the film ‘Soylent Green’ and H.G. Wells’ ‘Time Machine’. If children go missing… no!!!
Some dairy farmers were feeding ground up sheep to cattle. What are we being fed?
Do we really know what we are putting in our mouth? What is the aetiology of a vegetable?

Thanks, have seen the film. For those who haven’t I suggest “Watch”.

This is an excerpt from a letter from the Chairman (USA Chapter) of ***Catholic Concern for Animals *** (sorry the links didn’t transfer over):

Catholic Hospitals Reduce Climate Impact by Reducing Meat Consumption.
St. Joseph Health System in Sonoma County, California, is among 14 hospitals currently participating in *Health Care Without Harm’s *national Balanced Menus Challenge. This voluntary climate change reduction strategy to reduce meat consumption by 20 percent also protects the effectiveness of antibiotics and promotes good nutrition. While the *U.S. Department of Agriculture *recommends up to six ounces of meat/fish/poultry/beans per day, hospital food service operations tend to mirror the average American consumption rate of more than 8 ounces per day.

Do you know what is the carbon footprint of livestock production? A United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s report *Livestock’s Long Shadow *found that livestock production generates an estimated 18 percent of total human-induced greenhouse-gas emissions globally (greater than transport). Reducing our intake of meat can be a way to “act to reduce our carbon footprint” as part of the St. Francis Pledge.

What a great article Marfran!!! – hope this link works…

Yes, everybody should check out this link. This thread is specifically about*** cruelty* **to animals used for meat–but the conditions in which our 'meat" animals live creates, not only a situation in which they suffer, but a lot of health hazards for us as well. And then there is over-consumption and misappropriation of resources, the heavy carbon footprint, the pollution, etc.

Here’s another excerpt from the article:

**Most US meat is produced under a system that relies on the routine feeding of antibiotics to make animals grow faster and consume less feed grain. Arsenic compounds and hormones are given to animals for similar reasons. These additives further contaminate animal manure, which then moves off the crowded facilities, polluting land, air and water. Sustainably raised meat and poultry precludes the use of antibiotics for non-therapeutic purposes. Approximately 70 percent of all antibiotics used in the U. S. are given to healthy animals to promote growth and compensate for crowded conditions and poor husbandry practices in conventional animal production. **

The video of the dogs is just plain cruelty, but Western culture has it’s own brand of cruelty that a lot of consumers are not even aware of. Our industrialized cruelty comes at a high price for our health as well.

Check out the article. Hospitals are trying to reduce meat consumption. Of course I, personally, don’t believe in reduction–I believe that elimination solves all the issues inherent in TODAY’S modern meat consumption/industry. Elimination ends the cruelty to animals, improves our health, greatly reduces the carbon footprint of getting food to our tables, eliminates the degradation to soil and water that animal farming causes, frees up crops that we could then utilize to solve world hunger, etc.

But, you be the judge. Learn as much as you can about our “meat” industry gone wild. You can make better personal choices when you have all the information. “Meat” today is not the “meat” of Christ’s time, it’s not even the the “meat” of 50 years ago. I will abstain from meat because of the "cruelty factor" alone, but there are a lot of other issues that make consuming/purchasing it a questionable choice.

My dh and I are very aware of the cruelty factor as well. But for those that are not moved by it,many of the reasons and facts expressed in this thread should make them perhaps think twice when they are at the supermarket heading for the red meat fridges.
You do not have to abstain from the fun of patio grilling.Portabella mushrooms and veggie burgers are heathier alternatives for barbecues, since plant-based foods do not produce harmful concentrations of carcinogens when grilled.Did you know that a 9 year study by the American Association for Cancer Research found that there is a 60% higher risk of pancreatic cancer for consumers of meat grilled at high temperatures than for other people? You can consult The Cancer Project yourself at www.CancerProject.org
If we do not use the info our scientists provide us with for our benefit and well being, are we acting intelligently?🤷

This is a very good post!!! We humans can not eat meat raw as other animals do, animals who have the physiology and the natural attributes to consume flesh. Cooking kills bacteria and parasites that would otherwise make us sick and kill us!!! But the process of cooking also produces carcinogens. Again, the more you know–the better choices you make!

Distracted, I had to come back while the soup is on the stove.
What you are telling a fellow Catholic is very unkind. One can be fighting for more than one good cause.
The problem is that this particular thread is ABOUT ANIMALS
Start an anti abortion thread and I will meet you there, agreeing with you.
So will most likely the posters you are misrepresenting.
Love your neighbor and your enemy .It is a mandate for us Catholics.
i thought it was about loving animals more than human babies…

and take your judgmentalism and… find something constructive to do with it…

i think everyone should check out a site that shows aborted children…

then maybe they will decide it is better to spend hours and hours posting on the internet about how awful killing the unborn is

maybe saving a human life is better than saving a dog’s life… just maybe… just a thought…

Distracted, we are in complete agreement about abortion.Humans are superior than animals.I am a mother of more than one adopted children myself, and I am eternally thankful than my children were not aborted. So you see,I am spending my life and my time making sure these children that had no one feel very much loved and have whatever they need to thrive.
I noticed that you are spending a lot of time in this animal thread, and possibly have more entries than me.So your argument does not make sense.
I ALSO, care for the animals that may be suffering. It is called compassion.
In addition I like this thread because informs me about healthy food choices for my family.
I hope you understand now why I am here.Tam

I am a late comer to this thread, but I have read a lot of it. You have made it quite clear that you approve of cruelty and torture of animals. That goes against Catholic teaching, and it is apparent that the meat eaters on this thread struggle with the choice of eating meat and the cruelty in the industry. I don’t think that one poster, except you, makes light of the treatment of the dogs in the video. There are a lot of moral issues being considered in this thread, it’s too bad that you can not, or will not participate in the topic at hand. Most of the posters here are Catholic and also have strong feelings about abortion. I agree with the above poster who stated that you should start a thread on the topic of abortion and we will meet you there.

And animals and children go so good together!!! Pets are good for kids, help teach them about caring for another living thing, help teach compassion and gentleness. That’s why we love our pets so much. They are good for us and our children. And that is why we struggle with these issues about how our food animals are treated.

So true.

i am trying to counter-act the mentality that animals are soemthign that we need to focus more on before - or instead of - focusing on the lives of unborn innocents who are slaughtered ever day…

when we have corrected THAT problem - and children starving, etc… maybe we can all be a little more open to helping mere animals… We should also be focused on saving souls, not just lives… IT is a waste of time to always be whining and crying, posting 1000s of words on the i-net… about such ultimately unimportant thing as how animals are eaten. Nobody, i might add, meaning no Cristian, is in favor of cruelty to animals… I don’t see the purpose of this kind of thread other than to waste O-poster’s time as well as everyone else’s … . People going to Hell (or long excrutiatingly painful stays in Purg) is waht is most important… not whether or not we eat factory-made meat…

I hope you understand now why I am here

this is not worthy of my time… \

too bad you don’t seem to believe in being charitable to humans…(not me certainly) just dogs…

I’ve eaten horse in France without knowing it (until afterwards). ‘Misappropriated resources’ - there’s a trade in old, infirm horses turning up as food on a plate, utilitarian ethics suggest doing the same with dog. They’ve been raised and well-fed, should we now throw the product away (i.e. bury / incinerate it), it seems a waste of resources, or put it to life-giving use? Emotionally challenging, most people wouldn’t realize what they were eating (other than it being meat); and it would eliminate some of the problems caused by raising livestock such as cattle and sheep. Covers two functions - companion/pet and food. The more I think about it, the more responsible it seems. Some takeaway places I’ve eaten at, there’s no way all those shaped objects come from a chicken (they’re just the wrong shape). Who knows what goes into hamburger (it aint ham)?
I totally agree… why waste good meat when, esp when there are starving childrn in the world…

some people here @ CAF would seem to say to that: well, as long as there are no starving animals, no prob…

i think it is a good thing that they put a lot of the animal into hamburger… maybe that’s why i crave it sometimes over other kinds of meat… it may have parts that are good for you but never get used otherwise… Again… w hat a waste if that were not done.

for example, if a person has a problem with his or her thyroid, eating pig thyroid is a good thing… and maybe that is something put into ground pork… have no idea what is in it…

would like to find out though***…

Distracted, are you a doctor hun? You might then not want to make claims that consuming the thyroid of another animal cures a bad one in a human. If im wrong, by all means show me the evidence. Why dont doctors feed pig’s heart to people needing heart surgery?

Yes God cares whether or not we ate factory-made meat because of the process. It is higly modern and unnatural.

You realize, I hope, that not everyone shares your opinion of what concerns God. The Church has given us guidelines, but has not declared this activity to either be sinful or direct cooperation in sin.

Well, the Pope and the Catholic Church are certainly taking notice of how we, as a society treat animals and the Earth. Are you saying that you reject the idea that we have a responsibility to consider the ethics of our treatment of animals, particularly our “food” animals?

No, that is not what I am saying. We** are** to consider the ethic way we treat animals, even food animals. What I was saying is that we can not speak for God with anything beyond conjecture concerning eating meat that comes from large scale operations.

In keeping with the prohibitions on animal cruelty, I totally support the laws which prohibit inhumane methods of slaughter and limit the length of time animals can spend in transport. I also support government interevention and sanctions against companies like Westland/Hallmark Meat Company.

We can have some idea from the teachings of Christ.

I am glad you mentioned about the transport of animals for food. I do not eat meat. If anyone has to eat meat it is best the animals are killed and just frozen meat transported. It is just cruel transporting frightened animals in deplorable conditions.
